QuoteReplyTopic: Need advice and help... Posted: January 23 2002 at 6:58pm
Hi! I have VERY curly and THICK hair. For school, I always do the SAME hair style....put my hair in a "half pony tail." I have medium length hair....a bit lower than my shoulders. I`m looking for a new style....casual and simple. When I try loose, it always gets frizzy. Have advice?
I straightened it once, only temporarily. I loved my hair straight....but I had to make it curly eventually.. :( It was SO easy to take care of when it was straight. My mom was thinking of relaxing my hair....but I`m not so sure if its permanent....I`m not African American...so would it work?? I don`t want it to be permanent....a lot of people like my hair curly.
WHAT SHOULD I DO??? :(

Be very careful about about applying a relaxer to your hair. I seen a number of women wreck their hair by relaxing it. You really want a gentle no-lye product. I can recommend the one by Phytothérathrie (sold in the Marketplace on this web site). It is a quality product that is gentle and won`t harm your hair. You can read about the product here and even ask questions of Karen. She will answer them. Get as much information as you can before making your decision.
A friend of mine has hair like how you`ve described: curly, out of control hair. she went to this salon, "Ouidad" that was just for people with curly hair, and gave her this stuff to put in it, and it looked really great, even down! I`m not sure if they have this salon where you live, but they might have another kind of place for curly-haired people, or at least some kind of hair product like my friend used.
Thanks for the info. For that salon, I live in New York, but I don`t know if there is one near me. My mom got me this relaxer, but I haven`t used it yet....I`m too scared! :( It says "Please follow the directions carefully to avoid skin and scalp burns, hair loss, and eyes injury." It also says it can cause blindness!! :( :( .My mom says she knows how to use it, but I`m still skeptical. It`s by "Dark and Lovely" and its called "Beautiful Beginnings." I`m 12 years old, so I don`t know if its right for me.
I use Paul Mitchell hair conditioner...and it works great, but it still doesn`t keep my hair in control. My mom should be getting more hair products soon 8)
hi. yes, relaxer is permanent!!! i would advise you not to do it just because it is so damaging, even if u get a no lye relaxer. curly hair needs a lot of moisture, and maybe thats why your hair is frizzing out. because the cuticle is open and its trying to get moisture from the air. i suggest you go and find a better conditioner and use it liberally, i also recommend you find a good deep conditioner and do it twice a month. i hope this help you

Karen often reads these discussions and offers comments. You can also go to the home page of this site, go to the bottom of the page, and click on ASK KAREN. It may take 3 - 5 days for an answer but you will receive one from her.
