wavy hair

I told my hairdresser that I wanted to grow my hair a few inches. He said since my hair was wavy, the length had to harmonize with the wave. The wave is about four inches. I`ve run into wave frequencies all the time in engineering but never expected it to be an issue in hair styling! But this stylist is the only one that seems to cut my hair right. Do other wavy haired people find it difficult to get a flattering cut? Expecially a long wave?
