Thicker ponytail

Hi, I am going to a rather formal wedding and want to do something glamorous -- I have long hair, somewhat thick hair and was interested in something either very down with that sixties -like volume at the crown ---or a thicker, more glamorous ponytail ---

To achieve either of the effects --- should I use some sort of a foam piece or exactly what should I use? Thanks in advance for your help!
