QuoteReplyTopic: Too much Conditioner? Posted: October 27 2000 at 4:12pm
Hi, Is there any such thing as applying too much conditioner to your hair. For example, what happens if you put a protein pack on your hair this week? Then next week you put a deep moisturizing treatment on your hair, and the following week after that you put another protein pack on your hair.
Would it cause your hair to break off, or is it actually good for your hair even though your hair is already in good condition? Is there any such thing as using too much conditioner? I've heard the saying, "Too much of anything is bad". Does that notion even apply to a good hair care regimen? I appreciate all comments. Thanks for your consideration.
I shampoo and condition my hair everyday, if not everyday every other day. My hair is very healthy and it grows from an inch and a half to two inches per month. It is a misconception that african american women should shampoo and condition their hair daily. Your hair is an organ just like you would wash your face daily to exfoliate dead skin cells the same thing works for your hair and scalp. The reason why black women have a hard time growing their hair is because ignorance. Now there are some conditioning treatments that were not meant to be used on a daily basis. It all depends on the condition your hair is in the first place. Remember once your hair is damage it is going to fall out anyway no matter what conditioner you use. What ever don`t fall out in the wash will surely come out in the rinse. It is a myth that black women shouldn`t shampoo their hair daily and I don`t know where it came from. Our counterparts shampoo their hair daily and as the result they have healthier hair. And it isn`t because of that lice theory, it is because shampooing daily is habit forming and once you are use to keeping a clean scalp you will not be able to endure the oil that is produce from stimulating the blood flow in your scalp which produce oils. That is the reason you need to shampoo daily to get rid of the toxins, oils, and dirt of your daily life. Once you realize that you will have beautifulo healthy hair.
As you said IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE HAIR. Also hair type I think. I have a pretty good grade of hair. I thought almost like you a long time ago. I was washing my hair daily if not every other day because I thought it would make it cleaner & healthier and grow faster like my caucasion friends/co-workers. I did this for years, and with ME although it was growing I was losing moisture. It really wasn't working for me to do this. I believe that most caucasion try to keep the oils out of their hair with YOU AND ME it's essential we have moisture in ours. Althou some like yourself DONT like to admitt it the TRUE fact is our hair is different. from theres. Now I wash my hair about once every 2 wks and it's MUCH more healthier and stronger than it has EVER been. I'm not sure about yourself, but in order for my hair to be cleaned, I DO NOT have to wash it EVERY day or every other day anymore. I do spray/moiturize it daily, and it seems and feels great. I get my ends trimed. 8-10 wks and even have it colored. Now sure how long yours is, but now mines is just at the middle of my back. Yes like yourself perhaps some blacks need to wash their hair daily due to preventing dirt/build ups what have u, but I"m living proof, not all of us need to to have healthy long hair!!!!!!!!!!!!. You should speak ONLY for yourself and just because some blacks don't wash their hair daily like yourself, it doesn't mean they're ignorant. Perhaps like myself they DONT NEED TO.
As you said IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE HAIR. Hair type & need too. I have a pretty good grade of hair. A long time ago, I thought almost like you. I was washing my shoulder length hair daily if not every other day because I thought it would make it cleaner & healthier and grow faster like my caucasion friends/co-workers. I did this for years, and with ME although it was growing I was losing moisture. Some dont like to admitt this, but the true fact is: our hair is DIFFERENT from theirs. Most Caucasions I know tells me that most they try to keep the oils out of their hair with most blacks like YOU AND ME it's essential we have moisture in ours. They also tell me that they usually cannot go a day or 2 (the most) w/out washing their hair, or it will get greasey and smell. I'm not sure about YOU but this isn't the case with me and (most other blacks I know ). Since getting with the program for my hair needs etc, nowadays I wash/deep cond. my hair every other week and (I have to agree w/other's who've been around me for yrs) it's MUCH more healthier & stronger than it has EVER been. Again, not not sure about yourself, but in order for my hair to be cleaned, I NEVER had to wash it EVERY day or every other day. I do spray/moisturize it daily, and it smells and feels great. I get my ends trimed 8-10 wks and also have it colored. Not sure how long yours is, but now mines is just at the middle of my back (finally). Yes like yourself perhaps some blacks feel the need to wash theirs due to preventing dirt/build ups what have u, but I"m living proof, not all of us need to do this to have healthy long hair!!!!!!. You should speak ONLY for yourself and just because some blacks don't wash their hair daily like yourself, it doesn't mean they're ignorant. Furthermore, it really doesn't make your hair any cleaner, healthier, great smelling than anyone else. Perhaps like myself they SIMPLY DONT NEED TO DO THIS.
PS, Yes, I have black/caucasion friends with both Healthy and uhealthy hair. However, if you carefully READ some post on this cite and other cites about hair, there are some caucasion who wash there hair daily that complain about DAMANGED/UNHEALTHY hair too. I have to say that most black women I KNOW take VERY good care of their hair whether home based or otherwise. The ones who frequent the salons are VERY faithful in doing so. The proof of the healthiness of their hair is in the pudding.

It does not matter if you have healthy hair the point is to keep it healthy.
You can over condition your hair because it can cause build up and leave a film on the hair that why there is shampoo. Shampoo has a detergent to get rid of dirt and so on. I have found out that our hair needs lot of moisture. Therefore I condition wash my hair every 3 days. Run water on my head and us conditioner as a shampoo instead. On sunday i use shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo is used as a clarifier to get rid of dirt and excess conditioner.
motowngirl.com you can read this link it is really helpful. There are other links but I can not remember them right now.
i agree with party2mom (sorry if i messed up your sn)....im mixed and even with my hair type i cant wash it everyday. i used to, thinking that because it was natually curly that as long as i conditioned it that it was healthy for me. my hair got so dry. it started breaking off on the ends. the water here in florida is full of minerals and its hard. in india i could wash my hair everyday, but here, i cant. i have to wash my hair once a week, and in between that time i use oils, other wise it gets really dry. water here in the states is full of chemicals. over in india the water is so pure that you dont even need conditioner. basically what im trying to say is that we all have different hair types. naturally if you have oily hair then it would be essential to wash it everyday. but alot of african american hair types may lack oil, and shampoos will strip that out if you wash it everyday. no one is ignorant for that...they are doing what is best for them.
