Hi everyone,
I have relaxed neck lenght hair, which I am thinking about weaving to give my hair a rest. Does anyone think this is a good idea. If I get a weave I would like a style that doesn`t look fake or big. I also don`t want to use glue, cause that is just a mess. What styles do you recommend. Also, does anyone know any good weavers in the New York area, that don`t charge too much. I would also like a style where all my hair is weaved, but that doens`t look fake. If you have any pictures or websites with pictures please post them. Thanks a bunch.

There are many different ways to get your hair weaved depending on how long you want them in. The glued in method is only supposed to be worn up to a week, but I know I see people leaving them in MUCH longer. lol I guess that`s good if you just wanted a quick job for an event or occasion and then wanted to take it down after wards.
The sewn in method is supposed to last longer- a few weeks, but I read that this limits your style options because you cant part the hair since the braids underneath will show. But this looks more natural and you dont have to worry about it coming aloose.
Then there`s fusion- it lasts up to 3 months and looks like your own hair- no tracks no lumps no braids no nada. But it really isnt healthy at all. The weave is applied with a wax to the ends of your own hair and bonded with a heat. This process can take up to hours and the removal can only be done by a professional. The benefits of this weave is that you can do virtually any style you`d like since it looks like your own hair. THe downside is the hair breakage when the weave is removed and that the weave will often detatch if the wax wasnt applied right.

BUT if you want- you can always do something as simple as a ponytail to see if you like how longer hair looks on you. You dont need glue for it- just a few bobby pins, and if you like the look then you may tell your stylist what method you want done.

Oh yeah- for natural looking weaves, it would be wise to chose hair that closes matches your color and texture. Its almost foolproof!

Do you recommend any stylists in the New York Area?

I got a weave for the first time back in February (or was the January??). It was done in a circular motion with some of the front left out to conceal the wefts. Since my real hair is past my shoulders in the back, I wanted more length and so I had two packs of sixteen inch hair sewn into my hair (yes, my head is big). I only kept it in for three weeks. It proved not to be a great experience for me. So, I`ll give you some pointers:

1. If you have a sensitive scalp, I wouldn`t even bother with a weave. The reason being is that I have sensitive scalp that will dry up and flaked if not oiled properly or washed properly. When you have tracks in your hair, it is hard to oil your head and shampoo it the way that you are used to. It`s hard to cleanse your scalp of all residue and flakes with a cornrow with a weft on it in your way. You can`t reach every nook and cranny.

2. DO NOT buy cheap hair. I got this supposedly Yaky hair from a beauty supply store. I paid about $22 per pack. Plus, I had done some research on the web and came to the conclusion that Yaky hair would be the best for me. Typically, it is for ethnic hair, however, there are MANY types of Yaky hair sold under many different brands. Do your research and try to find a decent brand. If you wind up with cheap hair, do you know what will happen????? The hair will continually tangle!!! It`s awful when you try to comb it. Oh yeah, and keep in mind that Yaky hair is thicker. (I should have known that I got a terrible brand of hair because they spelled Yaky with an "i" instead of the "y."

3. If you want your hair to look good, be prepared to pay for it!!!! The hair alone costed me $44. And that was CHEAP hair!!!! The sewing in and styling was a 100 bucks. And that was a CHEAP salon!!! I would have paid twice that if I knew that my style would have lasted longer.

4. If you get Yaky hair, use a moisturizing shampoo. I found that Creme of Nature didn`t cause the weave tangle badly, although the hair would tangle on its own at the littlest touch of air. I made the biggest mistake in my third week of wearing the tracks and shampooed my hair with Head and Shoulders. I had to use something because my scalp was awful (see No. 1). This shampoo caused the hair to tangle so badly, I was unable to comb all of the tangles out, which resulted in me taking it out after trying to hide the hair in a ponytail a few days. I did cut out the tangles, considering I had so much hair, but I was just fed up, and eventually called it quits.

5. DO NOT get a weave right after getting a perm. Honestly, I`d say wait at least six weeks, because by then, you may have some new growth, which would make your cornrows stronger, therefore enabling the wefts to hang on tighter. I waited only three weeks after my perm, and by the second week of wearing the weave, some of the poor wefts looked like they were hanging on for dear life.

6. Honestly, now that I know, I`d say get a thin type of hair. Yaky is thick, and by having a lot of hair, sometimes that`s telling on you. It`s saying that all of that hair couldn`t be possibly yours.

I am not trying to scare you Rabia. I am just trying to warn you. I do have two positive things to say about the weave.

1. In just the three weeks, my hair did grow a bunch!!!! Very healthy new growth. The reason being was because I wasn`t fooling around with my hair, but the other hair, and that was giving my scalp a break (until it became irritated).

2. When you have plenty of hair, the possibilities are endless. Well, that`s not true because with tracks, you`ve got to tailor the style so that a weft isn`t revealing and all of that mumbo jumbo. But with the long hair, when I curled it, it looked really sexy (not including the fly-aways and tangles).

Just have fun, and DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!! Check out http://www.hairweb.com for some inspiration!
