Can anyone recommend something that I can put on my hair to soften it? Also my stylist noticed that the back middle part of my hair was breaking off so she said she will be unable to put a touchup in my hair. And since I am staying away from flat irons what can I do to keep the front, and sides of my hair straight (because of all the new growth there)? She said my hair broke off so much from wearing constant ponytails in the same site. I didn`t know that a ponytail could cause so much damage. So I have no idea how to wear my hair now (neck length). When she touches my hair it broke off from the ends. Has anyone ever had this happen?

Try getting this product by Profectiv called Break-Free. Rub it in your hair after a shampoo. It sorta acts as a leave-in conditioner, and it helps you to comb your hair when it is wet. You can also use it on your hair when it is dry, and I like to rub it in my scalp also. I love the products by Profectiv, and I know others that do, so I think you should give it a try. It isn`t very expensive, so you won`t be losing a lot of money if you aren`t satisfied. One jar here in DC costs about $5.00 at CVS. It isn`t a grease, it is more like a creamy lotion. In fact, all of the Profectiv products in the little jar are like lotions, each product varying in thickness.
Oh yeah, and I`ve learned that ponytails all the time are not a good idea either. It really can break the hair, especially if you`re the type that doesn`t take time to remove the rubber band, scrunchy or whatever it is that is holding it. Try wearing your hair in a wrap style. It is good to wear the hair out because it allows the scalp to breath.
The same thing is happening to me. My hair is really short at the front and I feel that it is due to the pony tails. It is also breaking at the back and sides. People keep thinking that I have deliberately cut it at the front to make bangs or something; but I haven`t. It`s just been breaking.
I feel that the best advice for you is to stop wearing pony tails. Try leaving your hair out for a change. :)
Also try deep conditioning your hair once a week with `Motions CPR`
You can also try this recipie:
16 oz ION Reconstructure (Only available in Sally`s) 8 oz Olive oil 4 oz coconut oil 2 tsp Peppermint oil
Make sure you use a moisturizing conditioner afterwards. A good one is: `Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer`
I have tried this mixture myself and it really slows down the breakage. I hope this helps.... :)
I`ve been using this recipe/technique for the last few weeks to get my hair straight without using my flat iron. I hope it helps.
After shampooing or condition only washing squeeze excess water from your hair (don`t towel dry). Next, apply a frizz reducing product to the hair ( I use Frizz Buster by Fantasia but they are all pretty similiar). Then liberally apply Elan Plus Leave-In Reconstructig Treatment ( I got it at Sally`s). I believe this the most important element, Elan Plus really seems to work with my naturally thick and corse hair. Blow dry hair until it is nearly dry then add Silk Therapy by biosilk (also you can try a generic product sold at Sally`s called "Shine") at this point you can spray in a bit more of the Elan Plus. Now blow dry the hair until it is completely dry. Finally spritz a bit more of the Shine or Silk Therapy and your ready to go. I use this technique only a few days out of the month when it`s almost time for a relaxer and my hair is really unruly. My hair is very soft and shiny when I am done. Also when I`m not using that technique I simpy wrap my hair and sit under the dryer which also give a good result.
Shaun I read your reply to Damaged. You said you blow dry your hair. This is what causes a lot of breakage. Blow drying or applying any excessive heat to the hair is bad. I am very surprised that you recommended this.
I forgot to mention this. Make sure you moisturize your hair everyday. No exceptions. A good one is African Royal M.O.M mixed with glycerine. And reduce heat usage. Also try not to comb your hair so often. You can try using hair picks instead.
AND STAY AWAY FROM BRUSHES OF ANY KIND. They break hair from the roots! (It happened to me once...)
Wash your at least once a week. (Make sure your shampoo is for dry, damaged hair.)
TRY USING ROLLERS with a hooded dryer instead. Make sure they are not the spiky ones. I prefer to use the smooth magnetic rollers.

Blow drying should be done in moderation, avoided if possible. I`m not saying that you can`t do it at all, but if your hair is bad off, you shouldn`t do it altogether. Sitting under the hood is better than actually blow drying. And Jubilee`s right about moisturization. Keep it moisturized, including the scalp in my opinion, because dryness does not favor our hair. It can cause it to become brittle, which then could lead to split ends and breakage. I`ve found out (finally) that when my hair is moisturized, it breaks less when I comb or brush it.
And about the brushing debate, honestly, I do it. But then, keep in mind that there are all different types of brushes with different types of bristles, so to say that all of them will damage your hair isn`t really fair. There are some decent brushes out there. Right now, I use one that doesn`t really have bristles. I like this brush I have now with me at college because I don`t see my hair coming out in the brush, except for the little that is shedding. It has spikes for bristles and some hairdressers use it for blow drying. I personally love it. But, I`d avoid the brushes with spikes that have those balls at the end. They can snag your hair and yank it out.
I`m sorry this is happening to you but my advise to you is to deep condition, deep condition, deep condition!!!! I cant say it enough. First, however, before you start your deep conditioning treatments go out and buy a protein pac which will stop your damage instantly. Then immediately put some oil on your hair,on top of that put a good conditioner on it and sit under the dryer for 15-20 mins. Do this 2-3 times per week and then continue doing it even after your hair is healthy. The only thing you do not have to repeat is the protein pac. This should only be done the 1 time but your deep conditioning treatments need to be done constantly. Oh yeah, and moisturize your hair in the morning and at night. Since your breakage is severe you will need to do this twice a day until your hair is nursed back to health then I would recommend putting oil on your hair once per day. Please try this because I think it will work for you.
