Hello all, Has any african american lived abroad? The reason I ask is because I might be spending some time in a latin american country (Puerto Rico, Costa Rica or venezuela) and I''m not too sure about the availability of hair care products for african americans. I would like to get a relaxer every now and then if I''m living in any of these places. any experiences? thanks cass
i lived in india (bangalore) for a while (im 1/2 black) but they had ALOT of african american products when i was there- which surprised me. i get perms too, they sell them there, but the problem is location. obviously in a rural area those are hard to come by. and not only that, some products might be on the self longer so the product might not be as good. i would think in a country like puerto rico you would have NO problem at all. there are alot of women there with a curly or african american hair texture. you shouldnt have a problem finding those products .
Thanks so much for responding....I''ve been to Puerto Rico before, but I didn''t have time to look all though the neighborhoods for products. I would have to cut off all my hair and start over. Also, you did your own perms while you were abroad? I''m kinda scared to do my own. LoL. I don''t want my hair to fall out. Ok, well now all I have to do is see what the situation is like in south america. Thanks!
yes, i did my own perms while i was there...ive been doing them since i was 16 now lol my mom said she was tired of my big behind ! how long do you plan on being there? you could just stock up on supplies- thats what i did till i ran out, and i was shocked to find ethnic hair care. the region i was in was frequented by tourists any how, so thats probably why.
Well I plan on being there for a at least a year or 2. I've never permed my own hair before and I'm afraid I'll burn the hell out of it. LoL. I guess I could stock up on products...But I'm not so good with hair. cassandra
awww i see...well i defintely dont know braids that last a year lol....too bad you arent going to dominican republic...dominicans can hook up some hair for sure!

Don't even worry about it! Not only will you find lots of varieties and styles procedures, but they'll be wayyyy cheaper than in the states. :)
I'm a Dominican, and I can assure you that if you stick to a Latin American country with enough black population you'll have no problem with your hair issue. Countries bordering the Caribbean sea are the ones that fit this category the most: Cuba, Dominican Rep., Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia (mostly the coastal area), Panama, Nicaragua and maybe some inmigrants of these countries to the rest of Cental America's countries. Just watch any major league baseball!!! :) Most of them are black or biracial.
There's not that many native blacks in Costa Rica, but you can always ask around and you'll have some black spots and they proabably will know how to care for black hair.
Remember we Latins aren't a specific race, rather we're a culture. We are the mixture of Native Americans, African Slaves and White settlers. So chances are you'll see all kinds of weird people when you travel down here, with weird hair/skin combinations. :)
Of those countries I mentioned as having black populations, remember depends also on location inside those countries. Some areas are primarly native, some white and some black. But most cities are quite mixed, so you shouldn't have a problem there finding hair care.
Thank you very much for the information megg. as much as i hate my hair sometimes, i wouldn't want to cut if off again. I'm seriously considering puerto rico, venezuela, and as much as i'd like to go to colombia, i'm not sure if it's still stable? please correct me if i'm wrong. well anyways, thanks!
