I need help with learning how to roller set my hair at home. I have 4 a/b hair that is relaxed and is currently a half inch or li'l more past my shoulders. I would like to know what kind of rollers to use, what kind of roller-setting products, and what to do after my hair is done under the dryer. I've heard so many women have good hair growth by using this method because it's less heat and fuss witht he hair. If this is so, than I need to jump on the settin' wagon! Also, about how many rollers does it take? If there is a how to website to help me, that would be great.

I just use those plain plastic rollers that they sell in different sizes at Sally's. I know I don't like hairspray on my roller set hair (I don't like hairspray period) I use a setting lotion by moisture max. I rarely rollerset my hair because it takes forever to dry and I end up taking it down and it's still wet so it defeats the purpose. I bought two bags of rollers for my thick hair. http://www.ukhairdressers.com/diy/index14.asp

I really like the Caruso steam rollers. I use the jumbo ones because I don't want them to curl my hair; I just want them to smooth it. They heat up really fast and I find that my hair holds the style better than when I used regular hot rollers. I put Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Styling Creme on my dry hair before I put the rollers in. I leave them in until my hair feels cool to the touch. After I take them out I spray my hair with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Hair Spray. It holds my style, but I can still finger-comb my hair after I spray it. It does a good job of preventing the frizzies too.

P.S. I hope I'm not wrong, but I think that the heat from steam is way less damaging to your hair than heat from an iron or regular hot rollers.
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)

Thanks Layla, for your advice and the website. It'll help me a bunch. I did have one question though, is there anything extra I need for my hair than what the website described? The reason I ask is because the model is white. I didn't know if there was a difference in products.

Like Juliana, I also use the Caruso rollers. My hair is too short for jumbos all over so I use all the sizes depending on how long my hair is or how curly I want to be. I have good luck with them without any sprays or setting lotions; I can get two or more days from one setting if I leave them in long enough. I just wear a bonnet or silk scarf at night.

I also have the magnetics (the smooth plastic rollers) but get too curly with them. I also get bored to death sitting under the dryer and sleeping in them is a form of exotic torture.

HTH!

Does your hair have to be soaking wet to use the plastice rollers under the hair dryer or the Caruso rollers? Also does your hair come out really curly afterwards? How do you wear it at night so not to mess up the look?

My mom ordered me some caruso rollers for my birthday. I'm excited, hopefully I can figure out how to do it good. I dont' think that site mentions setting lotion but that's what I like to use. I don't know how they do it at the salon but when they roller set it it dries so fast. Any caruso rollers tips for me?

Yes, the hard plastic ones work best with pretty wet hair. The Caruso's don't work on wet hair. They are steam rollers so they are used on dry hair.

The size of the roller for both methods will dictate the curliness: the smaller the roller, the curlier the hair. Also with the Caruso's the longer you leave them in the curlier your hair and/or the longer the set will last.

Some ladies curl their hair (either method) then wrap it at night so it is not too curly in the morning.

Depending on the length of the hair and the style, some ladies just wear a large bonnet and the hair is not too smashed down by morning. I just wear a silk scarf, but I like my do smooth and close to my head (not too poofy), but I just ordered a silk bonnet from tenderheaded.com so I will be able to let you know how it works at some point in the future.

Thanks Ter!! (Your name is pretty long so I shorten, sorry) I'm going to go ut this week and get some rollers to try it. I really need to get away from hot curlers.

Ter is good! I like that.

Yep staying away from the heat is a good thing for our kind of hair.
