QuoteReplyTopic: so angry with myself. Posted: April 12 2005 at 10:00pm
I've been trying to grow my hair and seems like whenever I gain
some length, a stylist talks me into getting more cut off than I
want. This time, she explained that it is all broken around my
face (an it probably is), and that a small trim wouldn't help. She
wanted to angle it "to get off the damage" and so I agreed.
Anyway, now it's all chopped up around my face and sides
(and there is still damage anyway)... I can't pull it back without
pieces falling out all over the place. When I look into the mirror,
the style is not "me"... It took me 7 months to get it to a decent
length and now I am back to square one. The problem is that I
am getting so depressed over this... I am so disappointed in
myself that I let myself be talked into this again... just needed
to vent... so sad...

You need to make yourself feel better about what has happened. First of all, some damage was removed, which is good.
Second, it sounds like you still have the majority of your length.
You don't like the shorter parts--can you clip them back with some cute clips?
Now, as far as the damage goes...do you have any idea what's causing
it? If you can get to the bottom of that, then over time, you should be
able to get away with less trimmed per salon visit.
I know exactly how you feel...I'm climbing out of that one myself...

oh, that's awful. i don't blame you for being upset. hairdressers are so horribly manipulative sometimes.
a few months ago i stupidly let my stylist talk me into layering my "mohawk strip"- the whole top layer of my hair. and now i can't do much with it in the way of braiding and ponytails and such, so i definitely can sympathize with that part of your story.
but like the others said, at least the damage is gone now and your hair will grow again.

That's too bad Akasara this type of thing has happened to me before now
I am cutting myself with the Feyes method of trimming and it worked
well. I like being in controll of my hair not the styleist
because they do what they want sometimes.

Akasara, I'm outraged about what happened. Some folks are prone to suggestion, esp. when they are a bundle of nerves sitting in the salon chair. I think an ethical stylist should know better than to propose a major change to a client which she has not had time to consider but will have eons to regret.
Next time, before you allow anyone to touch your hair, have a consultation with her. If she's not excited about your plans to grow it long, find someone else. Even if you have to go through a half dozen people, the time spent will be worth it.
I've noticed that many stylists tend to see "damage" on *everyone*. My best friend at work had hip length hair before Christmas, but at the end of a color treatment, which was magnificent, the stylist asked her if she wanted a trim. Said friend asked her to *just* take off the "damage". Now, at *most*, this may have meant 1/4", (in truth, her hair's condition was perfect!), but she ended up with almost half a foot hacked. To think I was going to encorage DW to see this woman when she starts coloring!
All I'm saying, I guess, know what you want in advance and be very specific about your intentions. And, please don't be discouraged. Think of this experience as your *final* hair mistake. Be positive! Best, Bob
