QuoteReplyTopic: I need advice!! Posted: May 01 2005 at 8:59pm
My hair is naturally thick & curly. I have had it professionally straightened twice & I use a flat iron because I like my hair better straight. But my hair has so much volume because it is so thick. I wear it up all the time. It's always so poofy. It's long and all one length. I know I can't get it cut short cuz it'll just get bigger. Does anyone have the same type of hair I do? How do you have it cut. Cuz I wanna find a way to cut my hair so it won't be so poofy. Would layers & bangs work? My hairstylist said layers would just make my hair bigger. Is that true? Anyways, anyone got any advice? Cuz my hair always looks like crap.

Well, I wouldn't know anything about having thick hair b/c my hair it between thick and thin, but my cousin and aunt have the thickest hair in the world. My cousin is 15 and she has thick curly hair. It's about shoulder length or maybe a little past her shoulder, but it just looks like she got this bigg puffy thing on her head. and she straightens it to and has been to the salons, but NOTHING seem to work. And her mom almost alway wears it up and sometimes occasionally down and her hair is almost to her waist. And yes, if you get you hair cut in layers it will really make it look bigger b/c usually people with thin hair w/ no volume get layers to make their look like it has volume. But you know what you might can do is when ever you go to the salon, they can thin your hair out b/c there are special kinds of scissors that are especially for thinning and I knew a girl w/ super thick hair and she would get it thinned out and it did help her hair. You probably can but those scissors at a beuaty salon or something.
So I would suggest those thinning scissors. Hope I helped!

Kally, I feel for you because my hair is somewhat the same. My hair is more wavy and puffy, and grows out, NOT down. I've had my hair cut every which way, and I always hate it. Unlike your hair which is long and all one length, my hair is layered and short and still fluffy. I just don't want to spend the time straightening it every day.
I really don't know how to help our hair types, but I have an appt. with a different salon on this Friday, and hopefully I'll get some new ideas to help with the fluff.
Let me know what you come up with also! But remember, the shorter you cut it, the shorter it will look because your curl will look many inches shorter than your cut because it curls up. Geez, that would only make sense to someone with curls.
**Hair type: 2a, which is wavy and fine.
**Color: Naturally dark brown, currently dyed reddish brown.
**Length: below shoulder length
Layers can have a thinning effect, but ...well, picture this. If
you have really thick curly hair, and you have it one length, sometimes
when it grows long it can grow into sort of a triangle shape (the upper
point at the top of your head, then your hair is thickest at the ends
where it's blunt cut. If you got layers (I would advise against
anything except long layers since your hair is already long) then you
would have more of an overall curly style, less straight - more poofy
at the top.
See this lady's thick hair with layers. Hers is not long but you get the idea what it would look like if it was.
If you did get layers, you would have to be prepared to not be able to
wear it up as easily anymore - the layers will come out. Also not
everyone likes this style on themselves, and you may prefer yourself
with blunt cut hair...you will have to decide. I would suggest
thinking about it for awhile before taking the plunge.
Also, like said above, you can just get the bottom couple of inches of
your hair thinned out (also reducing the triangle effect). This
looks very nice on the curly girls I've seen with it and is less
drastic than cutting into all of your hair for the long layers I talked
about above.
