I just got a package today delivered from the US to the UK and it cost me £18.02 in customs charges and it was only 1 pack of 2oz hair! not even enough for a full head and it cost that? Does anyone else have this problem with customs?  It almost makes it worthless to import?

Yep ... the UK are doing it in reaction to some US law regarding UK
inports.

Basically, if you order anything from the US totalling more than
£18.00 (including shipping fees and vat) you will be charged by
customs.

I had to pay an additional £30 when I bought my shrinkies and heat
wand from Doc's.

The only way to get around it, I believe, is to have the merchant declare it as a gift (which usually isn't taxed), or mark the value as less than 15 pounds (I believe that's the cutoff; everything below 15 doesn't get tariffed). I've done that everytime I've sent something to UKers and they've never gotten customs chrages. From what I hear, though, it's luck of the draw; sometimes customs will open your box, and if they find a receipt inside, they'll know (and tax you for) the real value.

I didn't know anything about this until today, I e mailed doctor locks to ask where my shrinkies were (i ordered them on April 12th) I ended up getting another e mail asking me for an extra $14.35! I'm not paying it, I wasn't warned when I ordered the shrinkies, has anyone else had these problems!

If a merchant declares it as a gift it can backfire if your goods then
get lost or damaged in transit. No compensation amongst other
things.

I dont think i'll bother.  The hair was ment to be really good. It has micro-polymer cross-linking treatment lasting 100 washes and is processed Indian hair to European texture and is treated with a Perma moisture treatment.  HOWEVER imo Bohyme felt like silk compared to it today   What a waste of money

As far as I know ... this is a US thing. They have done something
which effects UK imports to the US, so the UK have done the same.

pay. I was not warned either ... but apparenly that doesn't matter.

How grown up of us. As if running our currency value into the ground wasn't enough.

its a shame really as the supplier was really nice and i was looking forward to doing business but so far out of all my trials Bohyme is still on tops so far.  All my searches keep taking me to a dead end.  I want to be able to start my own label with a hair as good or better than the bohyme but im nearly ready for giving up! I have 1 last supplier to try! fingers crossed

It applies everywhere from the US to UK it has to be under £30 and declared as a gift otherwise you end up paying customs fee and delivery charge to your home.  The other thing is if it gets lost then you cant claim anything only upto £30 so if your order is in the value of £30 upwards you wont beable to claim any extra. If you order from China or India or anywhere else in bulk they only send FOB so it works out very expensive.

I mark all packages going global as "gift" or "$5.00" regardless of
what's inside and I do global priority. Packages have been reaching
the UK in about 7 days.

It's so not fair for you guys to pay these outrageous custom charges.

I'll be happy to help you replace what you lost, Samantha. Drop me
an email.

Are you guys sure this is only a U.S.-U.K. thing. I thought I heard of some customs issues early on with PlastikHaar (which is in Switzerland), and in response, she doesn't insure packages anymore. (I could be mistaken on this, though.)

Shell, As far I know the FOB stands for Freight On Board.  This means two things - location of the merchandise and depending on that location, the buyer is responsible for freight charges from that location (china) to your destination chosen.  I worked out it would cost a hundreds to have it shipped over.  The FOB is only done in bulk buys as far as I know.
