hi, I have the oddest hair and it doesn't seem to fit any category... It just touches my shoulders when blow dried straight and I have some bangs. I was told by my hairdresser that it is fine and really healthy, but I have a lot of strands so it doesn't look fine. I don't really have any complaints about volume. It is ok in that department. If I do nothing to it it is naturally wavy and curls easy. My problem is it seems to always have split ends. I have tried cutting it every 10 weeks and after a hair cut I will still see a few split ends. Last hair cut I cut an inch and still had a few stray split ends. These tend to be on shorter hairs that aren't in the cutting area. I really would like to grow my hair out but I seem to be fighting split ends so much, that each haircut eliminates any new length. The only thing I do regularly is I use a hotbrush to straighten and flip. I really don't blow dry much at all, I am very gentle with it and condition regularly. What is going on? Am I doomed to medium length hair? Should I get it cut shorter and start over? I am not after marathon long hair...just would like to get it to my bra strap before I go gray!

Eliminate your use of heat on the ends, cut those dead ends off, use a heat protectant if you can't resist using heat applied styles and by means limit your use of heat ; the more you use it the more the damage.Wendy try to ask your stylist also about the best product to use on your hair so you can see the best way to attain the ends you so deserve to get. I hope this helps ..good luck!

ELIMINATE THE HOT BRUSH -- that's the split end culprit.

Like babyautumn said, if you absolutely must use the heat then go out and buy a heat activated heat styling protectant--a really good one is "Infusium 23 Heat Activated Leave In Treatment."  I use it whenever I use a hot iron.  I used to have a lot of split ends too, but by minimizing the heat I use and using heat protectants I virtually have none anymore.

Think of your hair like a piece of silk--beautiful when taken care of but very VERY easily damaged when not handled with care.  Heat completely destroys the internal makeup of the hair so use sparingly.  Check out this link--it shows you microscopic damage from heat and chemical products--a really big eye opener.

Don't cut your hair to remove a few split ends. What you need to do is clip out the split ends you find. This is called S&D (Search and Destroy).

Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

Hi, I have had a brainstorm and let me know what you think. BTW I do S and D on a regular basis and I am getting a fly away look in front which made me think a shorter cut was in order. First of all, I am not sold on the hot brush, but don't really know what else to do to make my weirdly curly hair managable. (I say this because it is more like bends than curls lol) I am not really a high style gal, I like feminine hair that is low maintenance. This is my idea...I am getting my hair cut about 2 inches below my chin (Just long enough for an itsy bitsy pony tail) and I am going to wear a fall for a while. I found a really cute one that uses a claw clip That should reduce some damage if I don't pull it back too tight, right? Of course I won't wear it all the time, Like on the weekends at home when I'm not doing anything (which is probably half the time LOL) It will also give me the length I have been dying for. This way there would be no need for heat for some time, and I wouldn't have to brush and fuss with it as much. Do you think this is a good solution? Especially since I hate doing my hair.

I just found out something that could be contributing to my split ends. I have had several razored cuts in the past and I recently found out that razored cuts compromise the strength of the hair since it exposes more of the inner layer of the strand. Guess some major cutting is in order to get rid of all that!

Wendyladi98,

I found the same to be true for me as well.  Since I've been going to a REAL salon where the customers best interest is always at heart my split ends are virtually gone.

Let me go back for a moment -- I had noticed about 6 months ago after one of those "razor cuts" that my hair seemed to be unusually "split" -- I literally had splits on every single hair end.  My hair looked horrible.  I went online to research "razor cuts" and found out that when done improperly it can severely damage your hair--split ends and breakage like you wouldn't believe.  I was so upset.

Anyway, 6 months later now and everything is starting to return to normal.  I used to do those S&D missions every night--now there's no need for it.

Definitely do NOT allow a hair-cutter-person (what ever you want to call them) use a razor on your hair.

Layering with a single scissor blade, or with a razor blade, is very damaging to the ends of the strands.   Any layering should be done with scissors held perpendicular to the hair strands (and cut between both blades of the scissors).

Great Wendy, I hope the grow-out is as "painless" as possible.

Hi wendyladi,

I'm mitch319 I've been a haircutter/hairstylist since 1993 and I see that problem all the time  I live in Las Vegas and the dry heat can really damage your hair and cause split ends so for my clients I tell them to use a very good leave in conditioner and then dry yourn hair with the conditioner in it you might not see resuls right away but after 3 or 4 conditioning treatments with the leave in conditioner you might see a difference in the texture of your hair and your style will look better. Try to find a leave in conditioner that you can use everyday something not to heavy on your hair. This should work for you.

Sincerely

mitch319
