Hello to everyone interested in hair. It is a recent obsession with me and I find myself looking at everyone's hair. The reason is that for the first time for many years I am going au naturel. For me that means growing out the fake brown and letting the white show proudly. Am I mad? I don't think so. It suits me more than the bottle brown that wasn't fooling anyone. Everytime I pass a mirror I look at my white and will it to grow longer. I can't wait for the brown to grow out. Sadly, that will take a couple of years as my hair is shoulder length and I don't want to cut it. The sense of freedom is wonderful. When I was still pretending to be a brunette, I used to be petrified of anyone noticing the white roots. (It grows very fast.) Now most of my friends and colleagues have seen it. A couple have made good comments. One looked really shocked. But most have either not noticed or are just getting used to it. I'd love to hear from anyone else going through something similar.
Hi Sugarloaf! I too gave up the chemicals. I'm not going gray yet, but it was pretty hard to give up the dye in any case. I defined my dyed self as "me"! But I've come to prefer natural both on myself and others. I've always loved long gray hair, and hope to have it myself in the not too distant future (we've earned it by golly!). Welcome to the board!

Thanks for replying. Glad to hear I'm not alone, though I definitely seem to be in a minority. What we need is for some more famous actresses and models to go grey. My hair is in a straight shoulder-length bob and will (I think) look stunning when it is all white. My skin and figure are reasonably young looking so I'm hoping I won't look too old.
I'm not sure why it's so common to hide gray hair (now I've been
wondering). Is it just because the hair dye commercials are
telling us we need to cover gray? Or is that just a result of us
feeling that only young is beautiful? I guess that kind of thing
may come from a few hundred years ago or longer when we didn't live as
long so people who were older really were in a more decrepit state
(less health care a few hundred years ago, etc.)...but now we're only
living longer and longer, and staying healthier as we go. We (as in
everyone) really should adjust our ideas of beauty to include older
people (and gray hair). A beauty that is dignity! Maybe we
wouldn't be so afraid of getting old if we didn't feel we would be
looked at as less worthy than the youthful beauty. (That's how
I've caught myself feeling anyway when I noticed more wrinkles on my
face or what have you...)
I know someone with the look you described...someone I used to work
with had a chin to shoulder length bob, all white. I never
thought of her as looking particularly old I have to say. She
smiled all the time and was very nice, so I thought of her more as
looking friendly and fun!

This morning I discovered an unexpected bonus. I can now go swimming again without worrying about my hair dye. I also plan to spend the money I'm saving at the hairdressers on good skin creams and a few nice clothes.
The hairdressing and coloring business is huge. Fortunes are spent convincing us to pour chemicals over our heads. My hairdresser is not at all pleased at her drop in profits. She has made quite a few comments about looking 10 years older, looking like I'm wearing a white hat, and growing old gracefully. Luckily, I'm a strong person and , when I make a decision, I stick to it. I now only need to go for a trim every 7-8 weeks, whereas I used to go every month for a trim and a color. The amount I used to spend over a year was mind-blowing.
