QuoteReplyTopic: Help! Hair is horrible carrot orange! Posted: June 13 2005 at 11:58am
I dyed my hair at home with a ultra light blonde dye. I did look on the side of the box which showed actual results based on your natural hair color. I have dark blonde/light brown hair and fully expected to get a lighter shade of blonde (but not necessarily as light as the front of the box showed!) Instead, I ended up with incredibly bright carrot orange hair! Now, I just want to get my hair back to some kind of natural looking color. Any suggestions?

hjplatinum: What happened is that the red in your hair came
out. This tends to happen when you try to go blonde. If you
want to go blonde you need a dye with a green or blue base (or
"drabber") to counter the orange that wants to come out. You
can't tell what bases are in boxed color so if you really want to do it
yourself you will have to learn the color wheel and shop at Sally or
another beauty supply shop to buy your dye and developer (the base
color is written on those), or call the company that makes the boxed
color dyes and ask them what the base color is. If you don't want
to fool with these things, it's better to go to a salon.
(not a pro, but have gone orange with a box color before and went to Sally after that).

The picture on the side of the box shows typical results, but the instructions say to do a strand test to make sure you will actually be getting those results.
The lightening process results in light brown hair going to dark blond, then to orange, then yellow, then pale yellow. Clearly your hair lightened less than necessary, and the blond dye was insufficient to cover this.
What Susan has suggested will get you a more natural-looking color, but it may be insufficient to counteract the orange entirely, and it won't get it lighter so you can be blond.
You'll need to bleach it some more before applying a separate toner. This will cause some damage to your hair, and you'd be better off getting it done professionally.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?
