Metalgirl, from what I understand the problem isn't with henna being a vegetable dye per se (manic panic is a veggie dye, and it's never reacted with anything I've thrown on top of - or into - it, lol) but rather that many henna dyes you get from the market or BSS are actually metallic compounds with a lot of chemicals that do not act kindly when mingled with traditional dyes. I think a severe case could actually result in melted hair, and can def. turn it a weird green or grey. I've heard of this happening, too. Of course, trying to dye over henna with anything perm. may prove fruitless - it bonds to the cuticle in a way normal dye doesn't. It's not just pigment buried in the shaft. Very hard to get rid of, and it makes the hair resistant to taking traditional dyes, save bleach. I've bleached and demi dyed over my henned Fina hair with no problems. You just have to be careful to only use pure henna powder. And even some of those are mislabeled
. I get nice stuff from my local Indian grocery.

Well the hair on my head is a lovely copper red, but Im not looking too happy with the extension hair at the moment. *sigh* its still drying but it looks like the color didnt take as well, which sucks because my hair and the extension hair was the EXACT same color before dying. *really big sigh* I hope I didnt just waste 60 bucks...

By the way, henna is a vegetable dye and if you use that and then use an regular analine derivitive tint (that's what all professional tints are made of) over it, it can cause a chemical reaction that makes the hair get so hot it smokes. I have not experienced this with any of my clients, but I have heard about it from other stylists.
Kailka, I've had a lot of luck using plain old henna on my FinaFina hair. Turned out really pretty, and doesn't keep fading indefinately like dyed red hair is wont to do. I'm almost at the point where I'm going to henna my natural hair too. Almost, lol. It's permenant, though. And I'm fickle, heh. But anyway, just another option. It's tricky to get a nice natural looking red.
