I have very kinky hair transitioning from a relaxer (12 weeks post). I'm a type 4 hair which generally feels coarse to the touch. When not in my lace front wig or weave I simply spray with s curl after I have washed and deep condition and towel dried. I also use essential oil be it olive oil, alma oil, jasmine oil....so many to choose from. I learned to do this on a forum and it is a life saver. S curl does soften the hair and makes combing with a wide tooth comb from ends to roots more manageable. I cannot suggest anything that will naturally straighten the hair, so if you want it to retain its health without the heat I suggest weave or wigs which to me are protective styles. So my regime is wash, condition once a week, spray with s curl and infusium leave in conditioner, seal with essential oil, then I cornrow or plait in two.....wear my wig for a week and then start again. I hope this helps as an alternative idea.

I agree with Honeydoo about mixing and we apologize if anyone was offended.... However, alot of Americans are not pure blooded no matter what race you belong to; this is what we were stating.
Also, www.Nappturality.com accepts everyone. If you are growing your perm out than you belong there. If you are thinking about being natural than you belong there. However, speaking of perms in a positive way is not tolerated. Other than that, they talk about everyday life, homemade recipes and so much more, not just hair.
I understood what you guys meant. I agree with Nappturality...it's a great site.

I'm mixed (black/white) and VERY light-skinned (my mom, who is white is darker thank me. Go figure) so be default (and by VERY sterotypical "black" standards) I should have the "good hair" which I don't (can you tell that bothered me growing up? I hated the "good hair-bad hair" comments). My hair is kinky without a relaxer and shrinks to the n-th degree when there is even an ounce of humidity in the air. I am just now learning how to TRULY deal with my hair. I am not wearing my hair in a curly style (curly because I put so much product in my hair (S-Curl, ORS, Surge, & Mango butter- all at the same time) that it has no choice but to succumb to my will
i am 100% black to my knowledge- there is some native american on my mom's side like in my grandmom or her mom. but anywho- i have the tight coils with a definite curl pattern- it does have the potential to be very dry and fragile. I do daily co washes and add aloe vera and wheatgerm oil to my conditioner. I use a mix of glycerine, water and aloe vera as my leave-in daily. if i feel up to oiling my scalp- i do this at nite using one of the following: shapley's m-t-g, evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil, rosemary oil. Once a week i do a preshampoo treatment-i apply castor oil to my hair and scalp, then apply a thin plastic cap on my head for 2 to 3 hours w/o heat. I then shampoo, apply my rinse-out conditioner(which i leave in 5-10 mins before rinsing out), then apply my deep condtioner- cholesterol for 2 to 3 hours w/o heat and using the thin plastic cap. I then spray Beyond the Zone Protein roostertail on my hair after the cholesterol is rinsed out. I have experienced a growth spurt and definitely more moisturized hair this way. Hope this helps.
Me and you, your cousin and your momma too rollin on da strip on bow's
Being mixed does not equate to having "nap-less" hair or hair that is easier to manage. There are plenty non-African-American women who have beautiful 'nappy' hair. But try Condition washes. It helps keep naps, coils, curls very soft and manageable.
Thanks for the encoaragment..but once again it sounds like you have long curly (part hispanic) hair..if i dont relax my hair its not curly its just nappy.
Girl same here as I said tiny curls coils and naps.I could only get "curls" if I brush brush brush with my trusty Denman or with my fav. twistout style. Yeah I am half hispanic but my hair is just as nappy as the next.

Oh, That's fine Renee! I didn't bring it up to offend anyone of any race OR mixture for that matter!! It's nice to know your lineage and be proud of it either way.
P.S. I like your hair natural!

First of all... not everyone is mixed. I sure am not mixed with an ounce of any other race.(100% Nigerian!! Ijebu to be exact) But, that's not the point. Gasolina if your looking for help with your hair check out nappturality.com. I only advise this if your hair is completly natural. There's no perm or texturizer tolerance on that site at all.
hey! im 100% nigerian too. i was going to reply to that post but i didnt want to cause any drama. sorry for bringing it up again honeydoo

If it offended anyone by me saying "we are all mixed to some degree" I apologize. However seeing as America is a melting pot, majority of people I and many that I know come in contact with are not 100% pure. It can be the slightest mixture such as a Cherokee women having a bit of Souix in her blood, or Irish having an ounce of German, so on and so forth. Many African Americans do not have access to their ancestry so it's hard to say one way or the other. I didn't mean to offend anyone who IS 100% sure, however, I hope you understand where my comment came from.
yea that comment about everyone being mixed was unfounded...thanks for the suggestion missbeverly but I do currently have a perm so i guess I wouldnt be welcomed at that site. Right now I'm trying to grow my perm out and thanks to everyones suggestions about not using grease and using oil instead the shedding isnt as bad as it usually is..my hair usually comes out in chunks when i dont get a touch up within 5 weeks.

I have kinky hair as well and I'm natural. No hair is too bad to be natural, they key word is "LOVE" your hair. That includes, loving all parts of your hair from natural to relaxed and taking good care of it. Everyone I know is mixed with something, especially if you live in America.
Back to the topic at hand, I agree with Honeydoo conditioner washes are great for new growth. When I was relaxed I would wash my hair then style when wet, usually included a leave in and a hair lotion for easy combing of the new growth and let it dry that way. Also, you may be getting relaxers too often, I know when I got them often they it would make my new growth seem harder. I started waiting for 4 to 6 months.
Anyways, what is your hair regimen? This will be helpful to know.
Hi gasolina! We are all mixed to some degree but I've seen Japanese women with our grade of kinky curly hair. I'm a quarter Indian and whatever else is in my bloodline, but I have kinky curls. You might want to try conditioning washes to help keep your new growth soft and manageable. You won't believe how many women would love to have thick curly hair. Our hair is very versatile and beautiful whether relaxed or natural. But, if you ever need to vent about it (which I do from time to time) don't hesitate to post!!
Well, I think I can relate 2 u gasolina. My hair is really kinky and thick. But I do have a relaxer and I totally understand what ur going through cuz my new growth, w/ only a few weeks following a relaxer, begins to get really thick, frizzy, and not very soft. Therefore, it's difficult to comb through, there's breakage, etc. My advice is to try using a conditioner, but the secret is to keep it on for a long time, after washing. Just this past Saturday, I washed my hair w/ my usual shampoo. Then I applied my conditioner, only I left it on for approximately 5 1/2 hours. I know it sounds too long, but as a result, my new growth is now softer and easier to manage (be sure 2 use a conditioner that doesn't have a time frame. Sometimes the bottle will say to only leave on a few minutes, but others say to leave it on as long as u like). I would also recommend trying a good moisterizer (I personally like Hawaiian Silky's 14 in 1 Miracle Worker). Keep your new growth really moisterized everyday, and don't try 2 comb through it- be very gentle and try protective styles. Appreciate the beautiful kinks and curls, because that's how God made us. Although I love my relaxed hair, I'm still loving my natural hair too. U just have 2 nurture and care for it, like u did b4 u got a relaxer. And it's good to have thick hair. So many people are dying for thick hair. Hope this helps and God bless!

Hey I am hald WestIndian(Jamaica) and half Hispanic(Dominica Republic). And yes I am blessed with what you would call "Black people hair" (Tiny curls coils ond naps). To be honest the fact that I couldnt get my hair to look tighter than tight two weeks after my relaxer without using damaging heat every day and here in Miami... wel humidity and relaxers do not mix. Well I'm natural now. And it all hole diffrent story I don't have a bad hair day unless I want to and my hair is already longer than it was when I stopped relaxing. That aint never gonna go away your hair is gonna grow and it gonna look wierd (nappy roots straight ends). Their is no miracel that's gonna help. That's just the way it goes. You can have healthy hair. 5 weeks in to often and using heat often is a no no if you want long healthy hair so... My advice go natural! Or just deal.
