i agree with swede-
that sounds like very good advice. i've seen people do that before and it's turned out great!! i think your friend should try that!!
i don't recommend it, but capping for highlights is ALRIGHT because it spreads the color every where and it looks REALLY great when it's done and you dont miss and get it on other hair.. BUT- the bad part is that when you go to do it again, you don't get the exact same hair pieces that you've done before so it kinda sucks..
just thought i'd try to help :)
Thanks, tinfoil trees. Hm... I suppose I could look for it; I live in Alaska, so it might be hard to find. Is Manic Panic sold in stores like WalMart and Fred Meyer?
I don't want to be rude, but I don't think Manic Panic with only 40 would work that well on highlights, mainly cause of 2 reasons:
1: Black asian hair is super resistant to bleaching, it needs high volume developer to lift enough. 40 is good, but 50 vol would be better. Most bleaches are active for 90 minutes, and using 50 vol would equal a much better chance to reach very pale yellow or white in just one bleaching.
2: Manic Panic is an on scalp bleach, on scalp bleaches do swell much more than off scalp bleaches (bleach for highlights). And that's a problem when using foils, since the swellin can ruin the foils.
There's also a teqnique called baylayage, where you don't use any foils at all, you just paint the bleach on but that requires very high volume developer, many hairdressers use 100 vol or more, since the bleach will dry very fast since you aren't using any foils. I think it would be easier to go for foils.

if your friend wants to go the salon route to achieve platinum hair, she can do that and then use DIY dye to take it another step to the white. I HIGHLY reccomend manic panic's virgin snow...it's violet toned to counteract the yellow hues and and it's safe to use on already damaged hair...but manic panic's only available in the US and UK to my knowledge, and i'm not sure where you are located. In any case, good luck

My best friend is full-blooded Korean. Every year, the last day of our state fair, we get hair extensions together, but just two or three strands. She loves the get white streaks in her blue-black hair, and I must say, it looks awesome.
But after the extensions fall out, is there anyway for her to actually bleach her hair to full whiteness? I am aware that some hair can never reach platinum from black, but she's willing try and even willing to go through .....
Thankyou, so much!
I actually think it might be possible to do white in one step :D, My suggestion would be to go to Sallys or any beauty supply.
This is what you'll need.
An off scalp bleach/lightener, I'd suggest you go for Clairol Basic White or Clairol BW2
50 volume creme developer to mix the bleach with, I'm not sure 40 vol is strong enough.
A bottle of red-gold corrector (it's a product you add to the bleach to kill yellowness and gold)
You'll also need foils, a color bowl and a colorbrush to apply the color.
Mix the bleach add the amount of red-gold corrector you want, and make thin partings of the hair (if you put too much hair in one foil it will come out uneven), put the hairstrands in a foil, paint the hair generously with bleach and fold the foil. And keep doing it untill you've as many foils as you want.
Then you just need to wait untill the hair turns a color somewhere between pale yellow and white. 50 vol and BW will act fast together so I suggest checking the color of hair every 10 minutes. You can leave the bleach on up to 90 minutes, and I'm postive her hair will reach white by that time.
To maintain the platinum color of the streaks I suggest that your cousin gets purple shampoo and conditoner, Clairol's shimmering lights is good and cheap.
Good luck

when using bleach your hair will go from black to reddish orange, to orange, to light orange, to yellow, to light yellow, to faint yellow. then you need to use a violet toner to make it white, if i am not mistaken. its a long step but is possible. i mean you are going from level 1 black to level 10 blonde. i say she probably needs at least 2 session of bleaching to be able to lift her hair colour.
time between bleached depends on the skill stylist that is doing it, which mean between 30 minutes to 1 week.
i have seen many asians with white hair or salt and pepper hair. its possible. you should look at the asian hair post. there is a girl their that dyed her whole head platinum blonde.

I'm not going to give advice, cause I honestly dont know what kind of results she will get.I will reccomend instead maybe doing shrinkie streaks. These can be done cheaply with a plain old flat iron. They are really easy to do.shrinkies from the site below are awsome.the other link is to a brief tutorial.A whole head is very time consuming. But you can get thermofibre extensions pretty cheap.Another option would be clip in streaks.

My two questions are:
1). What are all the stages of going from black to blonde, generally?
2). How much time should be allowed between each bleaching? I will be
making sure she does A LOT of deep conditioning between bleaches.
3). What color toners or fillers can help out with the orange and yellow
stages? Like, does violet based work with orange? What about for yellow?
Or is it hopeless :P
