If your hair can make a neat bun, without hairs sticking out, they will
work better with a stick or two alone (I used to do this when mine was bsl, but its not there yet and I
can't get that style to work yet). If your hair's long enough
to do that, wind your bun up tight, ends underneath it, then weave the
hairstick from one side of the bun, out the other (weaving to your
scalp and back out a couple of times).
You can also put your hair in a ponytail, braid it, put in another
ponytail on the end, wind that into a bun and use the stick to hold it
in place (you may need a bobby pin or two for extra hold and for "stick
outs". Also works with a half updo with the upper half in a
braided bun.
I have instructions on the french twist page of my site in my signature on how to wear them with twists.
edited to correct nonsense from my overcaffeinated brain.
