Hello everyone,
I have very short brown, thin hair which I have been dyeing for 20 years due to gray hair. About two months ago I developed allergic reactons to hair dye (I went to a salon which said it used natural products!). So I tried dyeing it at home and the second reaction was even worse. The third time I did a patch test and the next day it totally swelled. Now I am depressed because I am wondering if I am destined to go totally gray. I have called several salons, but none seem to carry any natural dyes, except henna, which many say doesn't cover gray and shouldn't be used on hair which was dyed. Any advice? I would like to have it done professionally. I live in San Diego, but don't know how to go about finding a salon. The product I am allergic to is phenylendiamine and it is found even in most natural hair dyes. Thank you for your time. Natalie : (
I don't know how well henna covers gray, I've heard some say they use
it, but only to cover a certain smaller percentage of gray hair.
Its true that you should not use henna on dyed hair, (especially if it
has been bleached).
I'd call the salons in your area and ask them to check their dye and
see if the offending ingredient is in them, and ask each one what you
should do to get it dyed without that ingredient. One of them may
offer to dye it for you with something else.
