Hello everyone (Happy New Year)
My hair is naturally very light, but I have dyed it a few times. I havent used any blonde dyes on my hair for well over 9 months, as i used to go a few shades lighter. But it was a bit brassy so for a change I went dark brown, but did not want to damage it to used semi permanent and it took well and evenly. Last time I wen the hairdresser he said 2 inchs at the top was staining, and told me how to do semi permanent colours at home to sort it which it has . But I now (you guessed it) want to go blonde again. I don't want to damage my hair as its took ages to grow (had a nasty run in with a hairdresser who turned my hair pink yrs ago and had most of it chopped off) and was told by my friends that foils is the way to go, and that it would be easier as its a big colour change. I was wondering if that was true before going to find a stylist to do it for me (defnetly not brave enough to do it on my own lol). I have not dyed it for a month, is it best to give it a break before having it done and how long for. And should I also use a medicated shampoo to fade the existing colour if that will help? Any help would be great.

Your friends are correct as far as I understand (although I don't get foils myself). The way it has been explained to me from hair colourists is that a) foils are a better way to ease into a light colour change as they aren't nearly as drastic. Once you've had the foils done and if you really like them, you can always get more and more added or change to all over lightening later on. Also, b) foils are less damaging to your hair if you are going lighter as it isn't ALL your hair being lightened, but select pieces.
As long as you go to a reputable and skilled colourist, you should be just fine.

Thgere are some great people who add to this forum who have tons of accurate knowledge about hair coloring.
