QuoteReplyTopic: Solia vs. Sedu... the great debate! Posted: January 07 2006 at 1:07am
I have thick, frizzy, poofy hair (it doesn't curl... it poofs!). I'm of Mexican decent so I suppose that's why. I don't mind my hair right now since I wear it short in the back (so I can create a wispy effect with some spray gel), slightly longer in the sides (I clip it down on the sides of my head), and have bangs longer bangs that I straigthen. I've had hair like this for two years now and want to finally grow it out again like I did in high school, except this time I don't want to wear it in a pony tail every day. So I will be investing in a good flat iron since at the moment I only have a horrible Hot Tools and I hate it.
I have read reviews on folica.com and still can't decide... is there really that much difference between both of these? They both seem to have such great reviews.
Also, I think I read in a past thread that a Redken balm was good for straightening so I will be looking into that. I have been using thermasilk for my bangs and am not too impressed so I dont want to use that for the rest of my hair. And I have tried Ion which I got at Sally's but I HATED it too.
Also, should I change my shampoo and conditioner? I have been using Dove (I checked and it's full of "cones" ...thanks, I learned that from you lovely ladies) so I need to experiment and see if there may be something better out there for hair that will be straightened.
Thank you in advance! I apologize for this being so long!
Nevermind. Did some more research and there really doesnt seem to be much difference between the Solia and Sedu after all so I will go with Solia. But I am a little concerned with what it says on the follica website: "Heating plates wrap around edge for easy finishing touches" as it seems like it may burn my scalp if I get to close to it like with my old Hot Tools. Hope this isnt the case.
Just a little update for those of you (not) keeping tabs at home.

I've been doing alot of research on both irons and have also made up my mind about getting the Solia instead of the Sedu. It's almost $40 difference and right now I can use the extra money to buy myself some good hair products to use with my Solia.
Let me know how it works for you once you start using your new iron... I am ordering mine this weekend.

Hey I didnt see this post yesterday! Should have LOL!!!! I also researched the sedu Vs the solia and also the chi because I allready have it. Solia seemed to get the BEST reviews overall. I bought it yesterday and it should be here by the 23rd! I am so excited!!!! I love my chi but it is starting to pull and rip at the ends. This one sounds better. I will keep you all posted when I get it!
I ordered mine on Saturday and it has already been shipped... I'm so excited and can't wait until it arrives! I'll let you know how it goes.
As a little treat I went to the store today and got TiGi Catwalk Smooth and Shine and Spritz and Shine at Ulta. It was a two-set for $15 which was good considering each one costs about 13-14. But before I even took them out of the package I decided I only wanted the Smooth and Shine... anyone wanna trade? :>
I'm not sure how true all these points are, but it seems pretty clear to me that the sedu flat iron is pretty much a scam. I mean I've heard Jennifer ANiston uses it but has anyone ever seen anything that actually proves she does? This site actually has articles from magazines like Allure that proves she DOESN'T use it. She's probably never even heard of it! Also, the other stuff about the "as seen in allure" is also true. It disgusts me that a company would be so deceiving like this. When I found this article, I was actually looking to purchase the sedu and after seeing it, I lost all interested in it! Also, sedu is made by folica (as well as the solia) so it's no surprise that every review on folica's website rates the sedu "five stars". Their ratings are pretty biased if you ask me and I would never consider doing business with a company like that.
**The purpose of this post was not to offend anyone who likes these products. It's just a warning from a consumer like yourself to make your OWN judgement on these products and to be very critical of reviews and ratings as of course folica will make the sedu/solia "top rated" because they profit the most from those. I felt I was almost conned into buying the sedu because of all the "great" reviews and now I don't trust the sedu, solia and above all, folica. If you go to www.flatironreviews.com the site links to folica when you "check updated price". A review forum is supposed to be NON-biased experiences of a product and have no advertisements or sale links. This site is obviously owned by folica which means no review from it should be trusted.** Goodluck gals
Thanks for the information. I will be sure to be more cautious next time. For the time being I tested out my Solia today and it left my hair so perfect! I have had so much trouble in the past with my hair and this seems to be the first thing to actually work. I was sketchy after learning that follica does indeed own Solia but it has been great so far for the amount I paid.

good luck with it. looks like mine is going back. my mom burned herself with it then read this and decided i can't keep it (fair enough since she paid for half). read my latest post in the "sedu flat iron" thread... i'm doing research on different irons now and overstock.com is great!
Yeah I've read alot of reviews saying the sedu is dangerous but I haven't heard it about the solia (but wouldn't doubt it).
I looked at overstock and they do have a good selection. They had one called the SCP Tourmaline that I'd be interested in. I know the SCP is one of the best selling flat irons in the UK but I didn't know they had a US version available. I'm going to purchase one and I'll let you know how it works. The price is good and it's tourmaline!
