QuoteReplyTopic: Silicone-lined Microrings Rock! Posted: February 13 2006 at 8:50pm
Ok, this is my new favorite strand install method for a DIY. I have about 10 silicone lined microrings installed with my micro-shrinks.
I had decided with this last install use all micro-shrinkies... because they are easier to remove and are less visible with my thin/fine hair. I still really like the micro-shrinkie bonds but placing the hair strand into the smaller shrinkie must be more precise than using the standard or extended shrinkies. It is difficult to do the correct placement blindly on the back of my head with the hot extension iron. The micro-shrinkies were holding perfectly though and I hadn't lost a one until I put the color gloss on my Lush hair to revive it, that's when a few of the micro-shrinkie bonds got soft and loose.
Now, I just replace loose or lost strands with the silicone-lined microrings at the end of the day while I watch TV. I can place them on the back of my head without fear of burning my fingers or head all I need is my homemade threader and a pair of pliers! They have all held perfectly except for one which I had placed an extremely small strand into. I have 2 medium microrings (2mm, just got them in today) and the rest are large(2.6mm). They all lay flat and my hair feels smooth over them...and as I said...they stay in!
I will be trying out a weft install either later this week or on the weekend to see how I like that; but, I will be doing my next strand-by-strand install with these silicone-lined microrings!
I agree! I am liking the silicone lined microrings a lot. These days I'm using them more than shrink links.
They seem to have good holding power and of removal is easy too.
I would say go with the 2mm microring. I did notice some slippage with the large size. The 1.5mm is too small to fit the standard shoelace tip hair into.
That's a great price, but the prices from the manufacturer are even better!
You got that right. If you're operating a salon and go through these, you should only be buying from the manufacturer.
PS - The small rings have little to no room inside them to thread hair and still have enough for tipped hair. And, only a small needle threader will work on the medium silicone rings.
Good point...if I end up using these a lot, I will look into that. Which manufacturer do you buy from? I have been in contact with 'hair Compounds" but they do not carry the silicone lined rings...
I ordered my silicone line microring yesterday and I am waiting patiently. You all have got me truly exicted!!!!!! Please inform me also where to purchase them wholesale.

I am seriously impressed also!! I ordered the ones from Shrinkies.net in the large size and installed about 120 pieces with the silicone lined microrings and 100 pieces with the standard shrinkies. Last time I used extentubes and lost at least 5 every time I washed or brushed my hair, but I haven't lost a single silicone tube yet! How exciting!! I tried removing a few and they are very easy to open, with the extentubes I found that about 1 in 4 would completely collapse and was a nightmare to open. These are a breeze so far!
I pretipped my hair with E6000.........that stuff rocks! My hair is super soft, silky and fine.....although it is curly. The extentubes slipped very easily but these things havent budged. I have even got brave with the conditioner in the shower and have been dangerously close (with the tubes or glue they would have been long gone lol) and haven't had one move.
The only pain in the ass is with the silicone lining coming out but this could easily be my fault. I ruined about 20 of them during the install......a few I didn't notice until after I crushed them. I was using the large pulling needle and probably would haven't lost that many if I were careful. A small price to pay for something so great!!!!

Do you have any trouble with the E6000 and blowdrying? It says to keep away from heat on the bottle. I've seen E6000 at craft stores and online craft shops.
I'm really excited about the silicone lined micro-rings if they hold in fine hair.
Longhairaddict - I like your signature. I think it's a great idea and will help us all remember what everyone is wearing. I've copied your idea in my signature!

I got the E6000 at a local craft store, it comes in a tube like
toothpaste only bigger :) It was $5.49 and I have tipped about
250 pieces with it and have well over half left over.
I think you only need to avoid heat until the glue is dry. The
glue will NOT change under the shrinkie heat wand even if you clamp
directly on it....it must be very heat resistant. It also holds
its form very well, with the pre-tipped hair I bought before when I
took it out of the extentube it was smashed and hairs were going
everywhere. The ones I have checked look just like when I put
them in.
I would say they definitely hold in fine, silky hair. My hair is
naturally curly, it matches the indian wave perfectly.......but it is
very fine. I have a hard time with any kind of ponytail holders,
they always slide right off after 2 minutes.......even the elastic
kind. The regular tubes slid like crazy.
I've only tried the ones from shrinkies.net and I think I'll stick to
them. I like the large ones since they are easier to work with,
and my natural hair is full so covering isn't a huge issue. They
open easily, and after my last takedown I think I'll stick with what I
have found works lol.........nothing like yanking little tubes out
after your hair went bad in one week to piss you off lol.
Thanks for the comment on the sig line, I have forgot to update it
which I will go do now :) I really love this site and I'm sure I
will be around for a while!

I´m preparing to do my first sil. lined micro ring install, but Im a little clueless as how they´re put in. Do you part your hair in little squares to attach the extension? and then put a layer of your own hair over the links to cover? I haven´t really found a good demo online, so if u could point me there, that would be great. I´m gonna be in Argentina soon, so I´ll be doing them myself, and it can´t look bad! I wanna look great! ANy help would be great

CAUTION: Contains perchloroethylene. Harmful if inhaled. May cause dizziness, headache or nausea. Can cause skin and eye irritation. WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer.
Sounds kinda risky to me. I mean, I want great looking hair, but not if I get a tumor! I saw a post on here with pretipping using Contact Cement (it´s silicone). Perhaps that´s safer? I just don´t want anyone to get hurt
