I was just wondering is heat was less damaging than chemicals or the same amount. I know lots of people (including myself) loosing there curl pattern even though I am COMPLETELY natural. It's wierd. What does everyone prefer, heat or chemicals??
Hair Type- 4a/b *transitioning front of my head*
Length-ranges from 5-7 inches =)
Products- Garnier Fructis S & S Poo, Lustrasilk Shea Butter Mango Conditioner and Cantu-Leave in =)
i think heat is less damaging,, chemicals actually
break down the structure of the hair and remove
protein but im not sure of the extent of the damage
heating causes (used sensibly) ,, im confident its
quite less than relaxers though......

Chemicals can be way more damaging (b/c the ph can be as high as 13--on relaxers!!!). Keep in mind there are different forms of heat too. You have direct (hot combs, blow dryers, flat irons), indirect (hooded dryer) and air drying. Direct heat is directly placed on the strands of hair, not the best route to take.
For the examples sake, here is a visual: Imagine a hot comb getting too hot and what that can do to the hair (whew! not to mention the smell).
We've all seen women that don't know what they are doing at home with chemicals...not a pretty sight. Honestly...which "looks" worse (the hot comb scene or the bad at home job)?
I think chemicals are more damaging because like cookie said, they break down the structure of the hair which can cause the hair to be weak. Heat can be damaging also if used improperly or too frequently. I would choose to use heat over chemicals any day.
I wouldn't say that heat is MORE damaging than chemicals but I would definitely say that it can be JUST AS damaging as chemicals if used to a certain degree.
