Awhile back I was told by a hair stylist(not my stylist), that your hair can have the appearance of being dry, but it is in fact not. Is this true? Also, what are some specific techniques of moisturizing. I usually just take a nice amount of Mango butter and rub it on the ends and comb it through. Then I 'll use an oil moisturizer, and an essential oil.. Am I using too many products?

As dry as my scalp and hair can get, there is never enough, be sure to use a clarifying shampoo once in a while. But I'd like to hear some of the other sistahs comments on how many and which products they use. I try to keep it simple myself with ORS carrot oil or ORS olive oil on my hair and an all natural EVOO, Vitamin E, Carrot, Castor and Coconut Oil mixture for my scalp.
I try to limit what I put on my hair. The reason why is that I have a sensitive scalp and I noticed that my hair doesn't feel right when I have it loaded with hair products. Granted my hair is dry and prone to breakage, I find that go easy with the hair products I use. Currently I am doing conditioner washes and my hair is doing and feeling so much better. After I do a conditioner wash I use some leave-in conditioner and a oil, while my hair is still damp, not soaking wet. So far my hair is doing pretty good. As for daily moisturizing, it varies. Sometimes I use Nexxus Humectress, water and Vitapointe, 360 Stylin Afro Hair Softener(lightly), or some various balms that I am trying to get rid of. I do not pile these products on my hair, only few products at a time.
I think my hair does better with water based moisturizers. Or a mostly water and oil blend, especially when my hair is damp. But that is just me.

I usually use one moisturizer at a time, and it's enough for me. The trick for me is to put it on every day, and to make sure I get a good amount on the ends.
I don't do oils too much at all, because my scalp isn't often dry. I prefer some kind of lotion or cream on my hair that's going to penetrate the hair.
Phoenix recommended Elasta QP Mango Butter Moisturizer, and I LOVE that so far. I'm just disappointed because you don't get a lot for what it costs. Otherwise, it's spectacular. I did a braid out with it, and my hair is very soft and light.

I use shea butter followed by Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. I use two
moisturizers because I'm not good at reapplying every day. My scalp
isn't dry anymore like it used to be when I relaxed my hair so I don't
have to focus too much on oiling my scalp. To tell you the truth, I
hate the feeling of an oily scalp. But since my mom is putting in
cornrows for me I used Wonder 8 oil spray on my scalp.

I think I agree with your stylist. Sometimes when I attend to my hair it feels dry on initial touch but then I find that in fact it's not. It feels soft without feeling greasy. I've been using jojoba oil in my pantene light detangling spray and shea butter with some oils (sparingly).
It is better not to weigh down your hair with too many products at once since the scalp pores can become blocked and growth can't function efficiently.

Oils don't provide moisture so it's best to use a creamy moisturizer such as, Cantu Shea Butter leave in or Hollywood carrot oil cream (for examples) and seal it in with a light oil like Wild Growth Oil, EVOO, coconut, etc. I use Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive heavy cream sealed in w/ WGO.

The Mango Butter is my moisturizer!!! My oil moisturizer was also a great moisturizer.. and I just seal in with the essential oils. So far I like the mango butter my hair just doesn't shine too much with. I've also noticed that when I use it it makes my hair feel wet almost..:-(

well i think im the only one who uses nothing!!! i dont like the feeling of oily hair or buildup. my hair has actually grown alot since i stopped testing it like a lab rat with various moisturizers. i think everyone's scalp produces just enough oil, and using extra is a waste. i only use a spray on mist by Dove, which i posted about earlier today. other than that, nothing at all. ive actually heard that applying cremes or oils to your scalp (scalp, not hair) serves as a breeding ground for bacteria. and thats why ppl scratch or "tap" there hair so much.here in houston, its really hot,so having products on my scalp is a waste and they melt down causing breakouts on my face. hope this helps u a little!

For some reason, my hair has a tendency to get really dry if I don't watch out, so I have to keep it well moisturized.....and heavy moisturizers work best on my hair, even though they kind of disappear after a day or two.
PickledGeuse, that moisturizer has water in it, that's what causing it to feel "wet". It's really good. I love it for my son's hair. It's very light and still moisturizes. He has biracial hair, so it curls when it's wet, and every time I use this on his hair, it's curly for 2 days.
