Hair style help.

   Hello, i am new to this so please forgive me if i am doing anything wrong. My boyfriend has long emo type hair but in the back it flips out, we were trying to figure out a way to get rid of the way it flips, because he said it annoys him in a way. He was talking about cutting it but i think the legnth doesn't have much to do with it. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get rid of the way his hair flips out in the back like any products or maybe a cut? Also i believe he currently does not use any products in his hair and to comb it he runs his hands through it. His hair is also thick in the back.
