After I found these hair forums, I realized that grease definitely wasn't for me.  But the other day while flipping through pictures of me and my crazy hair, I realized that I like it A LOT better when I used grease!  It was shiny. slick, and growing continuously. I really love the way it was back then.  But now, I cannot stand the texture, feel, or look of grease in my hair, although it made it look AWESOME, and neither can my boyfriend.  Currently I'm using mango butter, an oil, and another moisturizer.  The texture has changed quite a bit with using these.  Up close it looks ridiciously healthy, but when I touch it feels dead, dry, and dull. I've also realized that in the days when I used grease, I never got constant trims.  I'd just go when my hair "was that length again"....and it would grow back in NO TIME; When I began the new reigmen it was about every 6-8 weeks, nevertheless cutting off hair that hadn't grown even an inch.  Are using these new products taking awhile to finally register with my hair, or should I just hop on the grease bandwagon again?  I guess I'm looking for some serious debate on grease, or maybe a slap in the face to notice that I have to consider the facts between now and then.

Hi Yah PG.

I think the grease v oil will be an interesting debate and there is a wealth of information that says we should refrain from using grease becuase it blocks the pores and can stunt growth. I think to a certain degree this is true. Mmmmmmm when thinking about my hair becuase its thick/ natural i belived that my hair loved grease because it would eat up oil and thought oil wasn't enough. I get what you mean bout the trim thing because there is something about good ol grease that keeps those ends neat. For the past year or so i've been using oil (as educated at a natural hair show i went to)and no grease,, it did take some getting used to but i've decided i'm going to try to stick to oil bases like WGHO, natural jojoba oil etc. My hair has come on in leaps and bounds and my pores don't feel so blocked and this has contributed in part to my hair growth. To overcome any dryness issues i buddy the oil up with a good spray mist/braid spray like sulphur 8 / paltas, which keeps the scalp in good condition without that oily build up .

This is difficult one because i got a feeling that there is split view about the grease v oil use. Grease works for some and not others ,, same with oil. I always did wonder though whether our hair is just better off with oil and thats all we really need.  I have got grease at home and sometimes tempted and have to poured a little oil in it in order to use the grease less...... so there you go....

Hope you come to decision that works the best for your hair

i love grease...it makes my hair grow thicker. i use natures blessing and since its mosty a blend of yummy oils, it does have much petroleum in it...

But like Sharon said above, it's all up to use. Maybe you should uses grease on your ends (or scalp) and see how the mango butter works with it. I LOve grease, since oils are either too heavy or to light for me.

my hair hates grease and loves natural oils.  Coconut and almond and Indian oils are my favorites.  These oils have nourishing benefits for the hair because of their fatty acids and biological composition and are unlike petrolatum and mineral oil which are cheap man-made oils.  Grease does nothing but add shine for me.  No nourishment whatsoever. I'll pass.

Thats true Sistaslick . Natural oil does have more nourishing benefits(and aided my growth) even if grease works better from others.

If you feel like your hair was thriving when you were using grease than by all means use it.  The only reason I don't use it now is because when I stopped using it my hair really improved.  If you do decide to use it again you shouldn't put it on your scalp.  There are many other options for moisture and shine that don't have mineral oil or petrolatum.  If the products you are using don't work for you just try something else.  I know a lot of people can't use mango butter because it dries their hair out and makes it crispy feeling so maybe that's why your hair is feeling dry.  Find a good creamy moisturizer and an oil to seal in the moisture and you should be good to go.

If you dont have any problems using grease then continue to use it.  The only time I use grease is on my ends when I am wearing a bun because it protects my ends.  When I wear my hair out I stay way from the grease because it is too heavy and prevents movement so I just use a moisturizer.

I say go for it and run back to the grease.  Everybody's hair is different and you shouldn't necessarily do what others do.

I cant remember the last time I used grease on my hair but I use carrot creme after it has been pressed for about 5 days.  It works really well and it holds your hair like gel

Yes the proof is in the pudding (or the hair).  As soon as I stopped grease my hair was so much healthier, so it is obvious that grease is not for me.  However in your case you had good results with grease, which you aren't seeing now.  So if you feel that you were better off then go back to it.

You just confirm my belief that not everything holds true for everyone and that is why experimentation is so important.

What didn't you like about the oil?  The reason why I am asking is because we seem to like a lot of the same thing (when you was relaxed and currently natural).

Yeah, good ol' Blue Magic hair grease, made my hair soft, but left me with terrible dandruff because it clogged my pores.  I love the way Shealoe or Shea Butter feels on my hair.  I get that grease look, but it is much more healthy.

That's another reason I don't wanna use grease!  When I stopped using it...and started back up again my hair felt icky, and my scalp itched A LOT! Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation!!

I find that these moisturizers (olive oil, jojoba, almod oil based etc) leave my hair limp and very dull, even though I can FEEL that its soft and moisturized. Grease used to give me shine and the hair looked healthier. Maybe the trick is not to use it on the scalp, but just the ends. I think i'll start using again and see what happens.

So I bought Palmer's Coconut Oil Hair Conditioner.   It's pretty thick for my ends..which is all I'm concerned about!  It doesn't contain mineral oil, but I we'll see ..if  get that nice look again

oils are not moisturisers.....they only help to seal in moisture

I cant see anything wrong with using grease.  Everybody's hair is different, and what works for one person may not work for another.  I used grease for a long time.

I love TCB Naturals grease.  But i cant use it anymore cause i have sensetive skin.
