Ok. I am a girl, but based on the pictures I have seen for guys for formal events, I suggest getting a crew cut, and put some styling gel on the top to make it look nice. This is a popular style for guys, and, being a girl, I think it looks very nice on guys.

Oops, I actually meant long-haired guys, the ones who can`t "tidily" spike/slick or whatever their hair into the "common" styles.
