If you get occasional trims, as long as the growth is more than the amount trimmed, your hair will definitely get longer (the "net growth" will be positive). Trimming will definitely remove any damage, preventing length from being lost by breakage.
Other than that, stay away from scissors as much as possible.
Hair grows at a pretty consistent rate of about 6 inches per year (or 1/2 inch per month). Nothing really makes it grow faster. You can, however, help it grow healthier by eating right and drinking water, taking vitamins, and getting regular cardiovascular exercise.
