Advice on getting this style...

I need some advice on getting a half-decent hair style 

I saw this picture on another thread:



I've been looking for a hairstyle like this for a while but I have no idea how to get it. My hair's naturally curly but i straighten it pretty much daily (and yes I use all the proper precautions and stuff!). It's not too long but it's close to the length of the character in the above picture.

If I use the straighteners after washing and drying my hair I can get the 'flicks' (or whatever they're called ) but soon my hair just joins up into one big bunch lol.

Any ideas how I can get the 'flicks' to 'stick?'
