I've got natural straight hair, and want to try something different. My hair is fairly short and don't want full curls but wavy with a slight curl. Should I see a hairstylist, do I need a special cut, or are their products available that would be suitable ?

Try Rag Curls.  I curl my hair like this at night when it is past my shoulders.  Keeps it out of my face, keeps it from tangling up.  I dont' have nightmares about being strangled by my hair ( I roll in the same direction at night and wake up on numerous occasions to being choked by my hair!) and it's cooler sleeping in the summer time.

You end up with Rennaisance era waves -- depending on how much hair you put on each rag.  Experiment!  (PS -- I took an old tshirt and cut it into strips 3"x12", I wrap it around a pencil then rap my hair around that and it is easier to control.  Once I am done I tie the ends loosely, pull the pencil out, then tighten the rag.)
