I have naturally wavy, thick hair. I don't like it and the only way I wear it down is if I blow-dry it strait. This usually takes about 15 minutes and I hate doing it. I am considering having my hair chemically straitened. I am wondering what happens if my hair 'breaks' and what are the chances of this happening? What does the hair look like after it is chemically straitened... how thick would it be and how much movement does it have? Also... how much does this usually cost? Thanks if you can help.

Hi hol6:

You are one of many who are tired of their curly hair. I too have curly hair and get very tired of its uncontrolled attitude. Chemically straightening your hair can involve any one of three types of procedures. One way would be to have a salon use a normal permanent wave solution. She can either rod your hair on huge rods and restructure your natural curls into a controlled wave pattern. She could also use the same type of solution and comb your hair with a large toothed while applying the solution to sections of hair. These two types of hair straightening are done with a regular type permanent wave solution. It also must be neutralized. The third type and most damaging to the hair would be to use a chemical hair relaxer. This is a totally different type of chemical then the permanent wave solution is. I would suggest that you go to the salon and have a professional sylist perform whichever choice of straightening you choose. Because all of them aare chemicals and are changing your normal hair structure you will be damaging your hair. Make sure to ask the stylist for the best professional shampoo and conditioner to help your hair maintain a shiny bouncy look. Good luck. Forest

Hi,

Lisa Castillo has published an article here at HairBoutique.com that explains the process she went through with Rusk's product. She applied the product herself and explains what happened and things to be aware of.

You can read the article at:

Best wishes,
Karen
