Hi,  new here, so forgive if this topic has been done already.

I have naturally copper colored hair,  straight, between hip and tailbone length and in December 2005 i made a big boo boo.   I henna'ed my hair,  as i do every winter.....(my copper hair turns very brassy and orangy during summer so i have gotten used to doing 1 henna treatment each year to darken the hair and let it grow out again in the natural color.)

So the problem happened because i added lemon juice to my henna  (never had used lemon juice,  always used either water or raspberry vinegar.)   i left it on as usual and when i rinsed.......i was horrified to see my hair turn a greenish-blonde color.    i immediately went to a specialist to ask for help,  but no one would help.   so i went and bleached it,  then colored it.

Color took ok,   but hair was very dry and gummy.   so i did several  treatments......colored again and things started to look better.   ends very dry and hair tangled severely.   but it looked ok.   but the specialists told me my hair was dead and i needed to cut it off and start again.  i said "No Way"     then i was reccomended to use a special product  and i did.   well second disaster happened.

Seems my hair hates Protein,  and this product had lots of protein.   my hair tangled so much it took me over an hour to detangle it,  even with oils and conditioner.    so had to cut about 2 inches.

After that i started to use jojoba, almond and other oils reccomended at another forum,   kept using treatments for damaged hair and things began to get better.....then just three days ago,  i bought a great smelling conditioner and IC Shea Butter.....both highly reccomended.

Now my hair is again tangled, no shine,  limp and very dry....ends look awful and so crunchy.    so i oiled completely and braided,  and now i don';t know what to do.   should i cut an inch off?    ( I am due for a trim,  but wanted to wait until Sept.  seems i might have to trim within the week.)

I will be going back to the treatment condish for damaged hair,  i already use baby shampoo and use several oils mixed plus IC olive oil treatment.    i am now very afraid to change products.....don't want to damage my hair even more.   i have noticed my hair is getting layers naturally,   and wonder why?    i had 1 length hair until the Henna disaster in december and the friend who cuts my hair told me back in April that she could see plainly layers in my hair.    i have a few bangs,   but they are chin length and growing,   so are the layers due to breakage?    my hair did break alot during the protein disaster and then three days ago,  it broke alot too.

Any suggestions, ideas, comments?    any help will be highly appreciated.

What kind of products are you using? Shampoo, conditioner and what kind of protein treatment? and how are you applying it? You did severely damged your hair if it felt gummy like you described, and you will not be able to make it healthy again, but you can improve it, until you gradually cut off all the damaged hair. (Which will take a long time judging by the lenght of your hair). And yes, the layers you are talking about is breakage, "severe breakage". You should consider cutting it in layers, that way you can still preserve much of the length and at the same time cut off some of the damage. Cut off at least 3 inches. I know is a hard decision to make but what good does it do you to have long hair that looks bad. Think of it as an opportunity to get a make over. You may end up loving it.

Anyway get back to me on the questions above and we'll see what we can do.
