well the story goes like this. when i was 15 i cut my hair short and hated it, so i said i would never have short hair again. i grew that out and it was shoulder length for about a year. then i let it grow some more and it got to about bra strap length. it was that way for about 6 months and then a month before my 17th bday i was in canada on vacation and it was really hot and muggy and i was sick of it, so i got it cut to a short above chin length bob. that was good, ive had my hair like that before. i let that grow and for 2 years, my hair was at shortest shoulder length. right at the beggining of summer i got it cut to chin length again. and then i got a short choppy style that was really cute and i loved it. only problem being is that ever since then, i keep getting it shorter and shorter and shorter. right now, my longest piece of hair is about 2 inches long, but the bulk of it, is an inch or so. i just got it cut again today. and dont get me wrong, i love short hair now. but i do miss my long hair. i had really healthy shiney long blonde hair and i miss being able to put it up and stuff. and i dont have any money to go out and get any stuff that would make it grow faster. so one, i need to know how to kick this addiction of getting it cut, and 2, i was wondering if there are any home remedies, just normal stuff you have around the house that i could use that could speed up the growing process a little bit. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

Van, I know exactly where you are coming from. First of all, if you just take a good multivitamin that helps speed the growing up a bit. As for your addiction to getting your hair cut, you need to tell your usual stylist what your hair goals are, and from experience I am telling you to get ready for some bad hair days until you get the layers grown out, that has been the hardest thing for me, I recently got about 3 inches of layers cut out, and while my hair looks much better, it also is shorter!! I have about another 1 1/2 inces of layers left. You really must make a commitment to yourself to only get your hair trimmed about every 2-3 months and that is all. Good luck and let us know how its going for you.
Hello, I decided to grow my hair when i was in high school (at this time i have already finished college) and for some reason it never got any longer than past my shoulders. Well, the reason was that i ketp on cutting it short like you are doing. I have fine hair so it looks good when it is layered and shoulder-lenght and my hairstylist knew this so even if i went in for just a trim, he would always cut it into the same style. It wasn`t until my stylist, who lived a block away from my house, finally moved to another location i stopped getting very regular haircuts. I would suggest to avoid going even close to the hair salon because it always seems that we need a haircut when we go by it, and most importantly find something that will remind you of your hair growing goal. I began collecting magazine pictures of long lovely hair and put at least one on my desk so i could see it every day and remind myself of my goal. You may want to find some nice barretes or anything that would make your hair look lovely so you won`t be tempted to cut it during the growing process when all the uneven layers don`t seem too flatering. I didn`t have much money to buy any products until recently and even when i did, i noticed that i was still cutting my hair so the most important thing really is to make a commintment to stop cutting your hair. As of now, my hair is the longest it has been since i was....hmmm....seven years (i got my cutting habit when i was around 12), it is now 25 inches long, eight inches from reaching my waist. So if i could kick my haircutting habit, i`m sure you will be able to do it too. I hope i was of some help. Good luck Susan.

I`d just like to give my opinion as a guy with the same haircutting compulsion problem. it was actually someone on this site who suggested that if you had such a desire tfor constant change, why not go for different colorings instead? It worked for me - I`m a deep mahogany red now.

I know just what you are going through. I cut my one length hair (of 20 years) into a short bob about 2 1/2 years ago. It didn`t look that great so I just kept getting it cut again and again and hating every haircut even more until it became an obcession. I am now trying hard to leave it alone and let it grow back out. I am still getting color every four weeks but haven`t had a haircut since December 4, 2000. That is a record for me. I look horrible and it is killing me though. I fear I will break down soon and go for a trim but as long as my hairdresser will hang with me and just kind of neaten it up I`ll have my old hair back within a year or so. I think it just takes willpower and a strong desire to have long or at least longer hair. Sort of like being on a diet.
Best of luck.

It`s good to know that I`m not the only one... I used to have all one length curly hair down to my waist....and i absolutely HATED it ...that was before I discovered hair products. hahaha....so i cut it to shoulder length. I let it grow for about a year, and then cut it into a bob. Not satisfied with that I cut it a bit shorter (long-ish in front, a bit more cropped in the back). Bored again one night, i took scissors and cut the rest of it off...it actually looked pretty decent....and over the last year and a half i just kept going shorter. Somewhere in the middle I moved on to coloring my hair...it`s been every color of the rainbow and then some. It does help though....When I get one of those urges (and usually it`s when I`m pms-ing :) and I feel that i must absolutely have a new look that very moment...it`s usually a decision between cutting or coloring...and for the time being...I`ve been growing out my pixie since november....i`ve taken to coloring... It`s the bad hair days that are the hardest...but I just keep thinking of the end result. I too cut out pictures of long hair from the magazines...It does make it hard when all these modesl with beautiful long hair are getting their hair cut short...or when I happen upon a picture with a really cute short haircut... but you just have to keep thinking of the end result.
I just think I need to find a hobby, other than scissor-wielding.
