Light Skinned w/bad hair!

I'm half black, half white but I'm thinkin' I got more white in my hair than black because when I let it grow I starts out like a regualr dudes cesear cut but as the days go on the har begins to spike up a bit or lift from the scalp and not be as clean cut as I'd want. So as a result I been cuttin my hair all the way down myself. But I'm lookin for a more polished look these days... Any tips as far as products and techniques. I'm start from total scratch. I dont use any hair products or special shampoos. So its a fresh start... Any help would be appreciayed!!!
