I am finally back from being gone forever and I really missed this website. So I have some questions for you ladies. I cut my hair again a while back and now I want to let it grow out. What are some things I should do to make sure my hair grows and looks strong and healthy? Also, what are some things I can do to keep my hair from breaking and to make it moisturized? Right now my hair is a little past my ears but not much.
Some people pre-treat their hair with oils and conditioner
pretreatments, on dry hair, when they are trying to soften their roots.
After you wash and condition, use a leave-in conditioner(s) and a light oil to seal in the moisture.
Wear styles that eliminate regular heat use such as rollersets, buns, phony ponies, braid outs, twist outs, bantu knots, etc.
Airdrying is a great way to get the hair back into shape.
Moisturize ends twice a day (morning and night). On a daily basis, moisturize, and then seal the moisturizer in with an oil.
Do not over-comb your hair or treat it roughly.
Lastly, the effect of some conditioners last only about 3 to 4 days, so
some women who are trying to get their hair in shape, do co-washes
(which is to wash the hair with conditioner only). The co-wash is
meant to keep the hair conditioned in between regular shampoo washes
and deep conditioning treatments.
Main thing: pay attention to ends, and keep them moisturized, followed by a sealant oil.
Also, try to stretch the amount of time you apply relaxers to avoid
overlapping on previously relaxed hair, which leads to overprocessing,
damage, and breakage.
Another thing, when my hair was at your length, I would wash, wrap,
airdry and use caruso steam rollers, and that kept my hair healthy and
strong until it got long enough to put into a bun.
If airdrying is not working for your current length, use a hooded
dryer on medium rather than a blow dryer because the hooded dryer is
not direct heat.
The weekly deep conditioning treatments and the mid-week co-washes are
the two things that really helped me gain strength. Airdrying helped me gain
thickness. Now, I am a faithful bun wearer until I get to my next
length.
Good luck

Gurl I am in the same predicament. What works for me is roller sets. Just oil your hair and keep roller sets in your hair and without heat, stress or too much manipulation it will be long before you know it. The object of the game is to keep all the hair you grow on your head. No trimming unless split ends get horrible, and not doing things that will break it off (color, heat damage, etc). My hair is all about 2 1/2 inches and longer all around and I am going to grow it back out my goal is to have six inches total by August. I figure if I grow a half inch each month I will have my six inches by then. Do you all think that this is attainable?
Rate of growth depends on genes, seasons, etc... but for the most part,
if you are an overall healthy person, you should get at the very least,
average hair growth and most importantly, KEEP it. Good luck and
let us know how you are doing along the way.
LadyEsquire said it all. Welcome back ceceney and Welcome aboard Serenity.
To thicken hair- use castor oil or vitamin e oil as a prepoo treatment on dry hair and scalp(concentrate on the ends) then apply a thin, plastic cap and leave on overnite or do this 20-30 mins prior to shampooing under a hooded dryer.
Make sure that you at least take a good multi-vitamin a day at a minimum.
Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Clean your scalp and hair weekly.
HTH.
