I came across some very old recipes and some of them I was laughing so hard. IT contains everything that a person needed to make and live at the time. I found them very interesting so I thought you might enjoy reading just a couple of them. I have no idea how well they work.
Hair Oil Cologne spirits, 90 percent proof, 1 gallon castor, castor oil oil 1 ounce, oil of cinnamon 1 ounce; mix well and it is fit for use.
How to make the hair soft and Glossy Alcohol 1 pint, castor oil 4 ounces; mix and flavor with bergamot,; apply frequently with the hands.
Dry and Brittle Hair May be made soft and brilliant by the use of the following formula: oil of roses 2 ounces, oil of tuberoses 2 drams ( what the heck is a dram? lol), oil of orange flower 2 drams, oil of jessamine 2 drams, oil of vanilla 1 ounce, essence of almonds 1 drop.
Gray Hair, to prevent Hulls of butternuts 4 ounces; infuse in 1 quart of water 1 hour; add 1/2 ounce copperas; apply with a soft brush every 2 or 3 days. When sea air turns hair gray, it should be kept oiled with some vegetable oil; not glycerine, as that combines with water too readily. The water that potatoes have been boiled in applied to the hair prevents grayness.
Have fun reading these. After I read all the very old recipes I realize how easy life is for us. For them they had to make everything.

I think the recipe for the early time hair potion probably did condition and add luster to the hair. I`m sure it smelled right nice too. I may try it. There is something I HAVE tried and the trick seemed to be my answer at the time. A girl, who had cut my hair years ago, gave me the tip....only after I mumbled that I seemed to have had a curse of no hair growth since. She told me to put glycerin in my shampoo bottle. So simple. SO WONDERFUL! I even use a few drops of glycerin on my wet hair before it goes into the towel, and have had very good results. My curls don`t look sad and wanting now, but the people looking at them do! Oh, and the latest styling aid for me is a combo of Bedhead uptight (first) and Loreal`s curl vive curl- shaping spray gel. It claims a 95% frizz reduction using "hydra-proteins" in their humidity control formula. Curl Vive doesn`t have any alcohol listed, but it does contain my personal favorite, GLYCERIN. Oh yeah, and castor oil.
