I am allergic to brown dyes and also blondes, my scalp itches like mad when these dyes are applied and after this my head comes out in blisters and won't stop itching for several days. Please can anyone help me as I am in my 40's and need to kep the grays at bay.

Sorry to hear what has happenend to you, you must be allergic to either the para dyes in permanent colours or the peroxide or both. You should really do a skin test 24 hours before applying any hair colouring product.
You can buy semi permanent hair colours that will cover gray hair , they only last up to 12 washes though, but have no ammiona or peroxide in them so no need for skin test.

Thanks Karen for your reply as I have always went to the hairdressers to get my hair coloured, I wouldn't have a clue as to what hair colourant to buy, could you please let me know what make these semi permanent are and I will gladly try them, if this agrred with my scalp I could still go to hairdressers and get my foils done. Thans Again.
You can buy semi permanent at boots, or any other drug stores,or sallys beauty stores, just read the instructions to ensure they have no ammiona, or peroxides in them. I would however just to be on the safe side do a skintest 24 hours before using any of these products, you maybe allergic to something else in these products. Some people have really sensitive skin. I am a hairdresser myself, and I would always advice my clients to do this , if they were sensitive to permanent hairdyes, as I said some people have highly sensitive scalps.
Hi & I feel your pain I am also allergic to dyes Goldwell salons have patches that they supply free called 'ColourSafe' they contain tiny amounts of PPD & Resorcinol it was they only 100% way I could find out if I really was allergic as sometimes a tint was bearable but last year I near went insane with red face/ears/painful throbbing scalp.I suggest you get your hair coloured in foils I have never looked back.Also some semi's even mousses contain Resorcinol.
As a retired hairdresser I still keep in touch with other hairdressers and it's becoming a more somewhat of an real problem of the past 5 years , I am not sure if the colours have different ingredients but in my day blondes had the lowest count of PPD's (Phenylenediamine) now I see some level 12's with a 3% which is terribly high.
PS. I only became allergic when I hit 40 yo my greys are 20% white 60% and base 20% so I really have a shocking time my hairdresser even has to tone but with plastic wrap not foil, so far I am still a lovely blonde the greys & whites only can be covered so far but the whites are blending in with the rest especially if when I use Redkens Cafe Au Lait in shades EQ

Thanks Mifny for ur reply ,I normally got an all over colour of dark blonde with a wee bit of chestnut added for warmth then i got blonde foils, the foils were no trouble so I asked hairdressers if she could do foild with two colours and she said it wouldn't cover my greys. Have u got any grey hair and if so does the foils cover it? Thanks Again. Please reply asap as this is driving me mad as I have all these grey roots.
Oohhhh yes I have a shocking amount of greys & white I get the hairdresser to use lengths of plastic wrap (like from ear as far back as she can go)placed as Close as possible to the scalp to use the demi on those greys/whites honestly if this method is used all over it cover your greys goodness me dark blonde or chestnut covers greys I can't see the hairdressers problem she could even make up a custom mix for you.
The greys & whites are the bains of my life !
Don't go mad I nearly did & it took 6 months to find a hairdresser that would Listen to me about my allergies & how to get around them I really know where you are coming from.

Thanks again for ur great advice I will be ringing hairdressers soon to c if she can sort me out I said she used foils but it isnt it is plastic strips with sticky ends. Have u got an email address i could email you and let you know how i get on and you could probably keep me right as what to ask hairdresser. Thanks once Again.

The hairdresser I go to just uses super long lengths of plastic wrap, places them along partings than flips them once the colour is applied than proceeds it all over until my whole head is done , but next time I am in the hairdressers warehouse I will be looking for the type you mentioned as it would be a lot easier . Don't worry you will be beautiful very soon .
I feel your pain!..and then some!..I too am in my 40's and have a problem with hair colors, No problem until about 6 years ago or so, I used any product I wanted and just like that it became a serious problem for me,..terrible itching on my scalp, then moved over my entire body, scalp blisters and scabs, facial swelling that was so bad I had to go to the emergency room and once my eyes totally shut on me. this lasted for about 3-6 days before the swelling was completely gone and the symptoms were tolerable, I was told I was alllergic to phenylenadiamine, so I should look for this before using any product, so I did, tried another product and the same thing happened, as I speak I was searching the internet for a product that i may be able to use, but most have some side effect, sprays, pills, or simply have a so so rating, if I find something I will let you know.
I have heard these are great but I have not tried them ....I just get my hair foiled.I have a shocking allergy to Resorcinol as well as Phenylenediamine (PPD)
