I noticed some of you have mentioned protein treatments.  I've been looking into this somewhat, considering trying some type of protein treatment.  I have some questions:

In your experience, what is the best protein treatment?
Are there any homemade protein treatments I can do? (such as foods/oils/herbs/etc that I can put on my hair)
How often do you use protein treatments?
If your diet is rich in protein, do you really need a direct application?

I would greatly appreciate any input!

Hi Sarah!  Just passing through & I noticed your post.  I'm no pro, but since no one responded yet, I decided to add my two cents =)

Anyhoo, I've been coming to this site for a little over a year & it has helped me tremendously.  This is where I learned about protein treatments.  I began using Ion protein conditioners from a tip I got from a very nice lady here whose hair is gorgeous!  I've used both the effective care & reconstructor treatments.  Both are very good  reasonably priced - about $10 from Sally's for a nice sized bottle.  I swear by Aveda Damage Remedy conditioner - not so reasonably priced at nearly $90/bottle, but it has some really good stuff in it (plant extracts, protein) & no cones.  It is what I've used from the time I began my healthy hair mission in 2005 & I have to have it - I started with a cut to the nape of my neck in Nov. 05 & it's now nearly BSL =) Because it is so darn expensive, I bought Tresemme because a friend of mine that has used it for several years has the most gorgeous hair I've seen in a long time =) I read your blog & noticed it has the cones now.  I don't know how my hair will react to it, so we'll see.  I do plan to get more Aveda but until then, I'll try the Tresemme!  Another good conditioner that has protein & is really cheap (under $2 at WMart) is LeKair Cholesterol Plus - protein with no cones.

Sorry so long, but hope this helps you some!  I'm sure someone will come along with some good advice for both of us!  Take care - your hair is awesome!!!

Whoops I posted some info in your other link...heres what I suggested:

Best protein:
Heavy protein treatment (excessive breakage, increased moisture isn't working, hair feels mushy): Aphoghee for Damaged hair

Med/light protein: (used 1x weekly to maintain protein moisture balance) Aphoghee 2min reconstructer

Light protein: Lustrasilk Shea mango or Herbal(herbal is light/med) cholestorol conditioner

I like to mix blackstrap molasses 1/4 tsp in a 1/4 cup (depends on hair length) of Lustrasilk cholestorol. Molasses helps stop breakage. HTH

KBaby, thank you for the suggestions.  And thank you so much for the compliments!  The Aveda sounds wonderful, but yeah... it's out of my price range.  I think I'll look for LeKair and see how it works.  I saw Ion when I was at Sally's, but didn't know anyone who'd used it.  I'm planning to keep using Tresemme until I find something else that I'm totally happy with because I've used almost a whole bottle with no bad results. (my hair usually reacts bad to cones)

Blackhoney, thank you also for the suggestions.  Can you get those like at Sally's or do you have to order online?  Black strap molasses, huh?  I knew honey was good, but I hadn't heard about molasses.  I have some on hand, I'll have to give it a try!

I love the Lekair Cholesterol product. I first heard about it on this board. Then I went to the beauty store to check it out and was concerned about the ingredients. Alot of its contents are said to be harmful to the hair. However so many people raved about it and it was only $3 so I thought I'd give it a try. My hair loves it! It makes my hair soft while making it feel strenghthened at the same time. And it makes my hair easy to detangle. I've tried mixing olive oil with it and it turned out to be a great idea. I want to try mixing honey in also. Just thought I'd share my review on the product.Smile

I was at Sally's yesterday and decided to get a little packet of Ion Recontructor Treatment to try it out.  I'm anxious to see how it works! (I won't be washing my hair again until Saturday, so I'll have to wait)

I think you'll like it!  It was good to my hair when I used it!  Oh, I took the Tresemme I bought back to WMart & exchanged it for the kind you use (Vit. C/E).  I have to say that I think it's a keeper!  Besides the fact that it smells AWESOME, it made my hair exceptionally soft & tangle free!  I used Biosilk when I first ran out of Aveda a few months ago; it was not good at all.  It made my hair "wire-ry" and it did not untangle well at all.  It started to break a lot.  I noticed the difference with the first use.  So needless to say, I quit using it (more than a half bottle left of the poo & cond).  I think I will keep using the Tresemme, but I'm gonna get some Aveda in the next two weeks!  Hope you like the LeKair & Ion!

I used the Ion Reconstructor treatment on Saturday.  My hair feels wonderful!  Even after 3 days and another wash.  I half expected the results to vanish after washing.  We'll see how it works long-term.  (I'm wondering if it'll build up and cause problems)

Glad you like it!  I just bought my Aveda stuff (couldn't wait any longer)!  But this time, I got the regular sized bottles instead of the liter bottles.  I spent almost $130 but I got  3 conditioners, 1 treatment & 2 shampoos.  Still loving the Tresemme!

As for buildup with the Ion, I can't say that I ever noticed anything.  However I use ACV rinse once  a month to make sure.  I just bought Aveda's detox shampoo which is supposed to remove buildup, but I like the ACV rinse (hate the smell), so I'll probably still use it!  HTHA =)

Dang Girl! I'm dying to try Aveda, but being in College means no moolah. So I'd say in about 2 years I'll be able to afford it!

Yeah!!!  It is expensive, but between what I bought & the Tresemme, I should have enough to last all year =) I do go to the salon every once & a while, so I should be good!  It's hella high, but a worthwhile investment =) As for no moolah =) TRUST ME - I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!!!!!!
