Stupid question from a novice.....What exactly is a texturizer supposed to do?

Is it a bad idea for coarse hair (like I need more texture...NOT)? Or am I not understanding it`s
true purpose?

No ?? is stupid.

Hubby has course somewhat oily hair (if he doesn`t wash every day) and he uses texurizer to help calm frizzies and define his waves.
Hair type: fine but thick; natural blonde with 15% grey
