Hi there! I just found this forum & hope that you all can help me out :) I'm a fostermom to an adorable biracial 1yo little boy (had him since birth). His bios arent in the picture and the few relatives that I have contact with aren't much help. My fosterson has very very tight curls and what his biodad claims is his same *nappy* hair. Up to this point, I wash his hair every 3-4days using baby magic (same that I use on his body). I apply PINK lotion every day and his hair looks nice for maybe half the day then it starts drying out. He still has his bald spot on the back of his head -like most babies get from rubbing their heads.. Above that his hair is sooo thick and tightly curled, although I pick it out every morning by the end of the day it is forming rows and looks like it's trying to do dreadlocks.. The top and sides look fine just the back does that.. Right now we are just sporting a mini afro, a friend that knows how to do cornrows says he needs to grow about 1more inch before she can do those..
Ok there's what I have, throw any suggestions for washing/moisturizing/styling that you have at me! Be gentle :) I dont know a thing but I'm ready to learn!

Well i am sure the veterans on this site will be along soon, but i will tell you stop the PINK lotion. anything with mineral oil, petroleum, sometimes lanolin, will not be good for his type of hair by the sounds of it. i've used it and after a few hours, if i touched my hair, it was snap crackle and pop.
one lady mentioned to me on this site to try wave nouveau moisturizing lotion (not the chemical) for softening curls and said she has used it on her boys since they were little and it really helped to keep their hair moisturized and soft. i have not tried it yet cause i can't find it in my area, not much afro hair in these parts. my hair is soft already, but i need the moisture part, so once i get it i will report my findings.
my opinion on the braiding thing, he's still a baby, cut his hair and give it a chance to grow in at the back, before braiding, depending on how tight it is it might make matters worse. JMHO
all the best

Thanks for the help!! I'll see if I can find the lotion you spoke of in my area as well!! I've looked at www.blendedbeauty.com and spoke with their own and she gave me some suggestions too! I'm willing to try anything to make it look nice! As for cutting it, since he is a foster child, I'm not allowed to cut his hair w/o parental permission so at this point that isn't an option.
Throughout the day just spray his hair with some oil and water. Just get you a spray bottle (you can get it from walmart for less than $1) and put a little olive oil in it and some water shake it up and just spray his hair with it. When you get ready to do his hair or once you have washed his hair apply some olive oil to his hair before you use any other product on it.
