Hello everyone, nice to be back again after such a long time!

Well...my hair (naturally light blonde as some of you know) has been medium brown (L'Oreal Feria 3D - French Roast) for ages now...and it's boring.  I initially only strived to get it this colour because I dyed it permanent blue/black (in other words, just black) when I was 16 and it has taken this long to get the colour somewhat even with no dark tips.  Now my hair is one colour, except for my 4 weeks of blonde regrowth as usual, I want another change: blue.

This kind of blue:

So that it's a definite blue but not too BLUE!, if you know what I mean.

My hair is a similar length to that too, but mine has lot of very short layers and texture, and a tapered side fringe.

So...how do I go about this?  My problem in the past is whenever I have colour-stripped or partially bleached my hair has been blonde at the roots, then orange, then dark orange, then brown...and whenever I have dyed over this with a funky vegetable-based dye such as a red tone of Special FX, my hair has just gone brown again.  I have no idea why this happens, but it happened every time I wanted red hair.  So I'm hoping blue will work better...

I could just slap the dye on straight off but my hair will just go black, I know that from a strand test...and I don't want that.

Advice please?

Just so you know...my hair colour is like this when freshly dyed:

But it washes out a bit as well...so at the moment it's even lighter.

I'm curious about "partially bleaching?" What do you mean by that?

Anyways, your hair turns blonde at the roots because that part of your hair bleaches faster due to the warmth of your scalp. So,my guess is,you shouldnt put it near the roots at first, just the length of the hair. Then, pull it through to the roots after like 10 minutes. (but I'm no pro at this by any means, this is only my personal observation when coloring) Leave it on the length a little longer since it is only getting to the orange stage.Once it is yellowish-looking,that is probably long enough.
I dont think you should have a problem with hair going brown when coloring it blue. My hair was blue once, colored ontop of blonde hair.
The only problem with it,is when it fades it will look grey.
