and does it depend on if my brush is hard, meduim, or soft

If you gonna use pomade the amount will vary according to the amount of hair you have. If you got a fresh cut not much needs to be used....If wolfin adjust accordingly.

How much hair is on your head? Sometimes people want to use pomade when all they have to do is just du rag. If you go by what TSOH said, then this was a wasted topic because it says that on the jar of pomade.
