I do know that in the early 1900's the durag was created to protect conks. A conk was a hairstyle popularized by Cab Calloway, that was created by relaxing ones hair by using lye. In order to preserve the hair's look and protect it from sweat and humidity, many persons wrapped a "fabric shield" around their head. This "fabric shield" became known as a durag.

Some people think that the waves created by a conk was the foundation for the origination of 360 waves. Conks lost popularity during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. During this time, many African-Americans abandoned the conk and leaned toward more natural hairstyles, like the afro. It is thought that some African-Americans reproduced the wavy look of the conk by brushing their hair in various direction, while still using the durag to perserve the look. This is one theory about the origination/history/roots of 360 waves.

When I had my white du-rag on, my grandmother told me I looked like a sheba/shiba. I don't know how you spell it, but she was reffering to those men in Iraq wearing those white things over their head and face.
