I have a round face and was thinking of letting my bangs grow out and then parting my straight hair on the side. I have heard that side parts will make your face slimmer. Is this usually true?

That is generally true. If you have a round face, you can consider adding length. Usually, people with round faces should choose longer to very long styles with bangs and a graduated shag or layers so that the face and the neck are given a slenderizing shape. If you don`t want long hair, go for a short style that will give you height. Part your hair on the side or add fullness on top (layered bangs are usually better than straight or heavy bangs). Try to avoid a neat bob with a fringe. Select a style that keeps the sides of your hair short or close to the face. The top of the head could also be given a ‘long’ look with a layered, curly style, extending to the back. Curls around the crown are good, but never near the cheeks, and can be used to create height. A severe, tied back style also makes the face look rounder. Avoid it. These are just general guidelines and everyone has different hair so experiment a bit to see what works best for you.

Well, my hair is long (near bra strap) and I want to keep it that way. I was just thinking I would grow out the bangs. I also have a wide forehead (in my opinion) that is why I am afraid to give up the bands.

A side part with slightly layered bangs should work very nicely with your long hair.
