I actually cut my own hair for several years before I met my wife (she does it now). The back was a challenge - maybe being a guy with short hair made it easier. I would get a large (floor) mirror and position it facing the bathroom mirror and ....

I trim my own hair. It keeps me from paying for someone to cut it the way I would not want it cut. If necessary I have my mom cut it. She used to be a beautician...guess that`s how I learned how to do my own. Of course my hair is bra strap length and curly. My husband says that no one could tell if I messed up. :)

Since 1999, I`ve been doing the same thing as Loveshort and Blonde because I don`t like going to the barber`s. Cutting the back IS a challenge. You always do this at your own risk.
Bad experience from a hairsalon can lead to worst experience at home. If you have luck and good at it,I SAY DO IT..
Don`t be cheap to yourself. You deserve to treat yourself to a nice relaxing professionally done haircut. YOU MUST FIND A GOOD HAIRSTYLIST>FIRST Hairstylist were not all born equally. Some have it,some have to learn it,and some just don`t have an idea of what they are doing...
I tried cutting my bangs & that was fine but when I tried cutting the side it was a disaster. I could never get the sides to be the right length or match each other so I kept cutting and cutting and well, I had to eventually go to the salon to get it fixed. OUCH. Don`t do anything but bangs and only if you chip a little.
Just cut it, just to experience it..... You`ll really don`t know till you do it. You might even get a revelation about yourself if you do it. This will probably help you to develop your ability of taking responsibilities from your own actions and decision making. Even if it comes out bad, atleast you`ll have something to laugh about later in the future with your grandchildren.
well, first of all ,I would`nt listen to last reply because who wants to look at a big mistake? If I were you I would have a salon or an experienced person cut your hair ,sure you pay a little extra but your gonna get the look you want!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!
I really don`t want anyone to cut their own hair, but if they thought of doing it.Why not? This way people will have a litttle bit of understanding,on why they should have their hair done by a professinal hairstylist. People are going to do ,what they are going to do. Well, atleast if they have their mind set on doing it. I say, get it done professionally.. It`ll save you from alot of aggrevasion, and embarrassment.Plus money to have your hair fixed.

Well if you are willing to risk embarassment you certainly can try. I`ve been cutting my own hair for over 10 years and I do my friends and wife`s hair also. I`ve pretty much self-taught myself how to do it and I`ve acquired information from everywhere. Many books all say different things. If you cut your own hair make sure you have a nice pair of shears. I`m not talking about going to K-Mart and buying a cheap pair. Get yourself a good pair from http://www.arius-eickert.com/ but be ready to spend $100+.
Make sure you know how to hold the shears when you cut your hair with your middle and ring finger and thumb. Don`t use your index finger even though it seems more natural when you first hold the shears. You will need to hold your hair with even pressure and as you hold your hair only cut up to your second knuckle on your middle finger. If you cut past that knuckle the tension on your hair may be different and the result could be uneven. Also it`s important to make sure that the hair you are cutting is equally moist with water throughout the sections you are cutting or else it won`t be even. Those are a few general rules to trim your hair or someone elses. And after you cut your hair take your shears and clean them off and place a drop or two of oil on the blades to keep the shears in good working order. Nothing worse than dull shears.
There is no way of doing it right, when you cut your hair for the first couple of times. It is definitely an experience you don`t want to miss out. I hope you are double jointed...

I have been cutting my hair for about three years because I was too scared to go to a salon. They ALWAYS mess up my hair. I`m really good at it, too, which really surprised me. I`ve done all kinds of cuts. I even cut it all about one inch long all over one time, and now it`s to my shoulders. And it`s fun. I like it.

I cut my own hair because I`ve had too many bad experiences at hair salons... and too few good ones. It only takes a couple of experiences of asking for a half-inch taken off and ending up with three inches taken off to decide to take matters into your own hands.
(Of course, not every stylist is scissors-happy, and someday I hope to find a long-hair specialist, but for now, cutting it myself will have to do.)
I cut my own hair for two-three years. I suggest you start off slow (maybe just bangs), then as you get more experienced, you can try a little on the sides or the back. Obviously it also depends on the cut... but it *is* your hair, after all...
