QuoteReplyTopic: Should I cut or not? Posted: December 15 2001 at 4:26pm
Hi everyone I have long brown hair to about my waist. It is fine but thick if that makes sense. I have always had long hair, it has never really been shorter than waist length. For a while I have been thinking about having it cut to about shoulder length. There is a style that I like that I would really like a photo of but I can`t find one. It isn`t layered but it is kinda layered at the front. If anyone knows where I can find a photo of this style or has any other ideas please tell me. Or if you don`t think that I should cut it, tell me. I have an oval face and I am 15. Thanx a lot. Emily
hi emily. i would get a few inches taken off instead of going all the way up to your shoulders...if you feel comfortable after the initial cut, then go ahead and go for the "big chop". This way, if you decide that you arent ready to part with all that hair..you havent really lost all that much. happy snipping! lol

I agree with shorty on this. Take a little off at a time until you find a lenght your comfortable at. I know all to many people that had long hair and said its all or nothing and got their haircut short and hated it, then its back to the years of growing it long again.
Another thing you could do is get a copy of the Virtual Makeover software or find a friend or sometimes you can find people online that are willing to do it for you. All you have to do is give them a picture of your face with your hair pulled back and tell them what type of style you are looking for and there ya go. See what you look like before you do something you might end up hating.
Best of luck

If you are not sure about this, don`t do it............if you feel that you will miss your long hair, it is a mistake to cut it......you will never have the patience to grow it out again..........if you want to talk about it, email me at sdjsull53@earthlink.net...........Dennis

It`s almost impossible to know how you`ll feel about your new haircut until after it`s happened. And then it`s too late to do anything about it. I`d strongly, STRONGLY advise against anything drastic. For waist-length hair, try cutting off 3-4 inches IF you think that`s really what you want. Wait a few weeks, and cut off a few more inches. That way, if you change your mind, you`ll just have a short growout period.
Although I realize we all will experience different feelings, I had long hair that I cut short, and I absolutely detested it. I would never, ever do it again. And you may feel differently. But again, you won`t know until after it`s too late.
Good luck!

If you want to do it do it, if not then don`t just remember if you hate it, it will take a long time to grow back to waist lenght. But I think you will look good with the shorter lenght, it would be a nice change.
Hey if you do cut your hair donate it to Locks For Love. They make wigs for kids who can`t be as fornutate as you and can`t grow hair or have cancer, or been in a accident and lost there hair so kids don`t tease them because there bald. This may be a good excuse to cut your hair, at least it would not be a waste.

CUT IT OFF,I SAY! Why and when will it be a good time? Your hair is very long and cutting a few inchec is not going to satisfy your vision. HAVE A CONSULTATION WITH A HAIRSTYLIST! if it goes well and the hairstylist have a clear idea, I SAY GO FOR IT. if the consultation goes bad,go to another hairstylist that will see you eye top eye. Life is to short to be stuck with an obsession and fear of having shoulder length hair. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL,ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF IT! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!!
Easy for everyone else to say, but put your self in there shoes and you wouild be saying otherwise. But your right though life is to short to worry over the lenght of your hair, so go for it, it`ll grow back if you hate it. Let us know what you decide Emily.
I think everyone should shave their hair off atleast once. This way,you will build a new perspective on life.People have been poisoned to think that beauty is everything, and looking good will be the answer to all their questions about life. I`m not saying it`s bad to look good, certainly doesn`t hurt. But let`s try to be beautiful in the inside too.

"I think everyone should shave their hair off atleast once. This way,you will build a new perspective on life."
That may be your perspective, and that`s great if it worked for you! But we`re all different and will not respond the same way to the same circumstances.
"People have been poisoned to think that beauty is everything,"
In my opinion, true beauty has little to do with hair, noses, or other body parts. Except for the heart.
"and looking good will be the answer to all their questions about life."
I`ve never heard that. Where did you stumble upon that notion?
"I`m not saying it`s bad to look good, certainly doesn`t hurt. But let`s try to be beautiful in the inside too."
Agreed, but part of projecting beauty on the outside is feeling good about yourself on the inside. One person may like the way he looks in short hair, and one person may like the way he looks in long hair. If we can do something that is legal and doesn`t harm anyone else but instead makes us feel good about ourselves, I say go for it!
Even if everyone else thinks a certain "style" looks good on you, if you don`t like it, you won`t look your best. Period.
HHMMMM?? What will happen,if I cut my own hair? What will happen,if I have someone professional cut my hair? Maybe my mom or sister can do it? What is the worst that can happen?

Gradual is the key word here. Remember don`t do anything too drastic. Hair only grows 1/2 inch per month on average. You have an oval face shape which is considered to be the most versatile face shape and many hair styles compliment your face shape. From the sound of it the style you are interested in sounds like it has some type of Forward Graduation to it in the front of the head. I would probably cut your hair to mid-back length about 4 inches below your shoulders and put some forward graduation in the front of your hair and begin there. if you want it cut shorter your could always have a few more inched taken off.
If I had a $1.00 for every email I have received since 1997 from people who cut off their long hair and lived to cry their eyes out and regret it, I would be in great shape.
Seriously, take your time and go very slow and gradual like several people here have posted. If you are not sure about how you would look, pin your hair up for a week and try out the feeling of not having your hair.
If you must make a change, start with bangs or just a few inches or even play with some layering around your face to give you a different look. Sometimes a whim to chop it off is just boredom speaking. Try to give it some time to see if you really want to cut your hair or just want someone new in your life.
Just remember, do what is right for you and not for any other reason.
Best wishes, Karen

Bring a picture of what you like your haircut.. NOT REALLY READY YET...nice and slow is always the best and the safest way. FEELING COURAGEOUS....Shop around for the best hairstylist that has a good reputation. Most salon in their right mind will give a free consultation... DON`T FEEL OBLIGATED TO DO IT ,right away. Whenever and whoever you felt most comfortable is your best bet.
