I was thinking bout french braid witht the tail pulled under, but I`m having a hard time firguring out how. I just bought a topsy tail today in hopes this will help. ANy suggestions???

Hello

I`m sorry to say, but if it`s the US Marines, you may not have a choice. Last time I checked all female recruits had to have their hair cut to shoulder length during boot camp. After that you are allowed to grow it back. Be sure to check before signing up so that you`ll be prepared. (You may also want to check with the Air Force to see if they have anything to interest you or compare with what you want to do in the Marines as they don`t require females to cut their hair duing boot camp.)

As for updos to keep your hair securely up, variations on braids can be a great option. The French braid with the tail pulled under takes a bit of practice, but can look very nice. One thing to keep in mind is to not braid too tightly. Otherwise the "pocket" under the center of the French braid will be too small to tuck the ends up. And, depending on the length of your hair, you may not be able to tuck the full length of the braid back under. Many different types of barettes or pins can be used to hold the ends in place. You could use hairpins or bobby pins, one of those "French" metal barettes, a pair of hairsticks, or maybe even some small combs.

Best wishes,
Teresa

I am very sympathetic. I went through a service academy with longer hair. I knew several people who had very long hair who did just fine. A very comfortable style that is easier and faster to do than a French braid is if you start a simple braid not at your nape, but at your crown (where it was fashionable to wear a ponytail in the late 80`s). You just braid on down and loop it back under and pin the end near where you began. You feed the tail back underneath.

If you want to wear a chignon, a hair net adds a little extra security. Scrunchies provide a little extra support.

Another thing you might want to try is instead of using cloth-covered elastic bands, you might want to consider poly bands. They are clear or black and resemble rubber bands, but they don`t grab your hair quite as much. The do, however, provide a more secure hold than cloth-covered elastic bands.

If your hair isn`t too too long, you can try another popular military style. Form your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Make a small opening in the hair just above the elastic. Bend the elastic up and back into the hole (not pushing it all the way through like you would using a Topsy Tail). Tuck all the remaining hair in the ponytail inside the hole. Secure the hole closed with a few hairpins. It may look a bit odd at first, but it is secure and fits well under a cover.

When working with pins, I recommend using hairpins instead of bobby pins for securing the main part of the style. Only use bobby pins for finishing any stray pieces.

Just remember that any style you keep must fit well under a cover. Combo covers are the most annoying. When wearing a ball cap, you can always shove a chignon through the D-ring.

I hope some of this helps. Just remember that you will be going through it with a bunch of other women who have a lot of the same concerns.

I was wondering...how does one use hairpins? Silly question, I know, but I can never get them to work. I`ve always used bobby`s, but my sister got me some hairpins for christmas and I don`t want to let them go to waste.
