It does have ammonium hydroxide in it, so could be considered a chemical relaxer....  It says it "alters the curl pattern and removes curl from permed hair"...it doesn't promise very straight hair, that may be why she sees it as different, but Ammonium hydroxide is a strong alkaline chemical that can burn your skin, just like lye.

It will not come off of your hair anymore than it is now....although it shouldn't still smell like the chemical.  Wash it well when you shampoo if it does.  The best thing you can do at this point is condition your hair really well, and try to take good care of it.  Keep it trimmed if you get any splits, but it doesn't mean you have to cut it all off and start over.  Give it a couple of weeks to adjust, and heavy conditioning will probably help you a lot and make it feel better each time you do it.  It is damaged now, but its texture will probably feel better after you get some silicones on there (use a heavy silicone conditioner).

I'd recommend you read some of the silicone posts here, you'll find tons of posts here of people talking about why silicones are bad because they build up.  This is something you should be aware of if you're going to use them, and you may want to consider taking steps to work with that in the future, but also realize that silicones do work wonders for chemically damaged hair, and they could help you greatly at this point.  Silicones are anything in the ingredients that end in "cone" or "one".  The higher up in the ingredients, the more of them there are in there.  Pantene conditioner has tons of silicones, so do most conditioners you find at your regular store.
