I saw an old friend of mine at a wedding and she looked great with long wavy hair. I asked her how long she took to grow it and she said that she had hair extensions. It looked real. She also said she had "human hair" extensions and that they are pretty expensive.

I would like to look into extensions but am wondering how to start doing the research and also what type of "expensive" she was talking about.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Depends on a ton of factors from whether you go with human hair or synthetic, whether you have a full head or just partial extensions, whether you have them braided in or added with hot application and what city you have them applied in. With hair extensions you really do get what you pay for and if you go with synthetic "partial" extensions it might cost you a couple of hundred dollars. A full head of Great Lengths extensions, depending on length and other factors can cost from a few to several thousands of dollars. Again, you get what you pay for and this is why getting quotes before you commit is so important.

I am sorry if this seems vague. It is just hard to give a fair cost estimate because there are just so many different things that can impact the bottom line.

There are several articles on HB.com about extensions. Type hair extensions or extensions into the search field to get a list.

Best wishes,
Karen

I wear hair extensions and one thing I would advise: unless you`re only putting them in for a very short time, I`d get the best quality hair you can afford. One time I decided to try some less expensive extensions (because they ARE expensive!) and I was sorely disappointed. They tangled horribly and the hair just didn`t have a nice shine to it at all. After eight weeks, it all but looked like straw. Trust me -- that was the last time I did that!

As Karen said, there are many, many factors involved in the cost. One of the best extension experts in the US is Adrian the DreamWeaver in Dallas, and I believe his minimum cost is $2,000. The hair that I buy is ~$750. The labor is ~$420. Fortunately, I don`t have to buy new hair each time! I get my extensions tightened about once every eight weeks.

Also, the longer the hair, obviously the more expensive it is. And the place where I get mine charges more for light colors.

Besides the quality of the hair, another important factor is the experience and expertise of the person putting them in. Just a couple of months ago, I went to someone new -- oh man.....it was awful. She kind of "forgot" to tell me that she didn`t have a lot of experience, and she left out way too much natural hair on top -- the extensions looked very fake. An experience stylist knows how to blend in the hair to look natural.
