QuoteReplyTopic: What does my hair need? Posted: January 19 2002 at 9:15am
I think my hair is nutrient-deprived, but I`d like to find out exactly what it craves, rather than take the "blunderbuss" approach with a generalized hair supplement. I have read the posts about "Analyz your hair", but this only tests pH levels and this may not be the (only) problem.
My hair is fine and fairly thick, and I`ve kept it about shoulderblade to mid-back length for over ten years, with occasional trims. I let it dry naturally, and I used to get natural loose spirals all over my head. Over the past couple of years, though, it has become more and more limp. Clarifiers don`t really help.
I want to treat the cause of the problem, rather than the symptoms, so I`d like to avoid any sort of topical volumizer or curl-enhancer. Any advice?
hi popgen. so your hair was curly before but now its more straight/wavyish? hmm. it sounds like u keep it pretty healthy. however, you could try a treatment or some shampoos/conditioners that have protien in it. also look for amino acids. it will say right in the ingrediants. you can also try a moisturizing treatment/shampoo/conditioner (take your pick! lol) try www.redken.com they have a line for everything! lol. ps- if you are more prone to drugstore stuff then salon stuff.let me know. i could probably come up with a few good drugstore brands. also, what products do you use on yur hair? if they contain a lot of alcohol they could be drying it out! (how do u know if theres a lot? if its higher up in the ingr. list, theres more of it!) a nice trick i heard of was to get aloe vera gel (if u use gel) and use it instead of the synthetic stuff. it gives hair some good moisture. let me know how this has or has not turned around for you.
Right now I`m using a "cheapie" version of Paul Mitchell`s Awapuhi shampoo and conditioner, which is pretty much a protein shampoo. I alternate that with CurlVive by Loreal, which is supposedly made for fine, curly hair. I don`t use mousse or gel, just a little hairspray on the bangs. CurlVive also comes in a spray gel, but I don`t really like to use it because it makes my hair feel "gummy." I`m not sure if either contains alcohol, so I could check on that...
I guess that either these shampoos are not intense enough, and/or I need to take some form of vitamin supplement to replace whatever it`s missing. I just need to find out what exactly that is, if that is the case. I wonder if there is a home test I could perform on a strand of hair to find out, or maybe a place to send off some hair to have it analyzed? I`d like to treat the problem from the inside out if I can.
